THIS IS SOME VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION THAT I RECEIVED THIS MORNING
FROM A CO-WORKER AND I AM FORWARDING IT ON TO YOU.
Postage will go up the end of June 2002 from 34 cents to 37 cents. It
will be from 9% to 12% rate increase.
But this isn't all. No more free E-mail! We knew this was coming - Bill
602P will permit the Federal Government to charge a 5-cent charge on
every Delivered E-mail.
Please read the following carefully if you intend to stay online and
continue using E-mail. The last few months have revealed an alarming
trend in the Government of the United States attempting to quietly push
through legislation that will affect our use of the Internet.
Under proposed legislation, the US Postal Service will be attempting to
bill E-mail users out of "alternative postage fees." Bill 602P will
permit the Federal Government to charge a 5-cent surcharge on every e-mail
delivered, by billing Internet Service Providers at source. The consumer
would then be billed in turn by the ISP.
Washington DC lawyer Richard Stepp is working without pay to prevent
this legislation from becoming law. The US Postal Service is claiming lost
revenue, due to the proliferation of E-mail, is costing nearly
$230,000,000 in revenue per year. You may have noticed their recent ad campaign:
"There is nothing like a letter."
Since the average person received about 10 pieces of E-mail per day in
1998, the cost of the typical individual would be an additional 50 cents
a day or over $180 per year -- above and beyond their regular Internet
costs.
Note that this would be money paid directly to the US Postal Service for
a service they do not even provide. The whole point of the Internet is
democracy and noninterference. You are already paying an exorbitant
price for snail mail because of bureaucratic inefficiency.
It currently takes up to 6 days for a letter to be delivered from coast
to coast. If the US Postal Service is allowed to tinker with E-mail it will
mark the end of the "free" Internet in the United States. Congressional
representative, Tony Schnell (R) has even suggested a "$20-$40 per month
surcharge on all Internet service" above and beyond the governments
proposed E-mail charges. Note that most of the major newspapers have
ignored the story the only exception being the Washingtonian which
called the idea of E-mail surcharge "a useful concept who's time has come"
(March 6th, 1999 Editorial). Do not sit by and watch your freedom erode away!
Send this E-mail to EVERYONE on your list, and tell all your friends and
relatives to write their congressional representative and say "NO" to
Bill 602P. It will only take a few moments of your time and could very well
be instrumental in killing a bill we do not want. PLEASE FORWARD!

Please, nobody is naive enough to believe an old urban legend like that. 
Simply enter the words ... email charge urban legend .. in your favorite search engine and read all about.

Yup this is bunk only people guliable enough to believe the post office or US Government own or run the internet would believe this
with out the billions we all invest in computers yearly there would be no internet or email to to deliver ...
In fact CB radio and FRS and GMS are Free to use for all and far more effective for communication in many ways then the computer you lose some distant in comunication but people are far more real with one an other and can acompilsh far more togeather.from a business relationship point of view.

Actually we own a ISP here in Seattle (www.isomedia.com) and sadly this bill is more than a rumor. As a ISP it has caused some major concerns, if the bill does pass the price would be passed on to subscribers of course.
While I doubt it would ever happen, it did bother our ownership enough to actually signing some type of protest letter along with other ISP's.
If I understand what I was told right, this is just a move to squash smaller independent ISP's and wouldn't really hurt the big guys. There have been several recent moves lately dealing with the costs of bandwidth and other issues that seem to be aimed at getting rid of the smaller ISP's.
Of course I could have been smoking crack and just dreamed all of this lol..

All of that is part of the urban legend. I once read through the whole thing on an Urband Legends site and it was one of the most detailed ULs ever. These things become fact to many people after a while because the arguments are so convincing.

This bill is no more then a rumor playerauction.
There is no such bill never has been since 1995 when this story started going around.
even though I believe that Large websites such as Ebay will work with the larger ISPs to make there services subcription only in the same way as HBO and showtime are on cable Email will always be a service that is provided as part of your ISP services which are not free anyhow.
everyone who pays a company to get online already pays a price for email so everyone pays to send mail and all must pay to recieve it.
SO the real joke here is to believe that email was ever free to start with..

While you were all sleeping the new postal increase in the case of 2lb and up priority mail is not anything like the crap ladeled out bby postal hype liars. they said why just 3 cents and just .35cents on priority,mail neglected to mention the 64percent increase in the higher weight class
I asked my US senator about it got back a form letter that indicated he did not have a clue.
I'm going to be comparing rates between the big 3 real close from on.
