It would probably cost them $200 to have someone set it up for them. Thats about it. Not a real noticeable bandwidth consumption.

I agree with the bandwith part but disagree with the part about fixing it as an easy ( $200 ) matter.
I think it was the Prez himself that accidently made the omission of a description search and it wasn't brought to his attention till at least 50,000 auctions were running and it was too late to fix. The Prez instantly increased the amount of characters to 75 to help compensate for the lack of the description search. BV had hopes of possibly fixing the glitch but gave up officially when the Description Search notation was changed from Coming Soon to Not Available.
There is no way a mere $200 can fix the problem or they would have done it a long time ago. I think the only way for the problem to be fixed is for all auctions to be ended, the fix installed, and all auctions re-submitted. Maybe that is actually only $200 in work but the re-submitting of 1,300,000 auctions that might get lost or never re-submitted by the sellers was much too large of a gamble and hassle for BV to ever attempt.
The BV management never choose to discuss the embarassing programming omission of the description search and that is the course that most companies would have followed.
A much more important BV issue is the growing number of BV hosted photos that are becoming deleted and replaced with little red x's. One of the main advantages of the very important paid memberships is the image hosting. If the image hosting is unreliable and important photos are lost and not backed up by the sellers on disks or their hard drives then that could diminish the number of BV ssellers will to pay from $60 to $180 in extra fees per year.

edited to change 130,000 auctions figure to 1,130,000+ auctions

When you have a bot scan your pages, which they would have to, it really isn't too difficult. However, you are correct with regards to the amount of pages involved. There are so many it would make better sense to have an in house script written and installed. $200 might buy the coffee for how long that would take.lol

I'm not certain that a bot could do the job. I think that the Prez may have minored in Computer Science in college because of his expierence previous with his other auction sites before AuxPal/BV. He may have made a critical mistake when he altered/modified the auction software used on BV. By modifing the software a person can make it better, and BV is better than many other auction sites software-wise, but it leaves open the possibilty of forgetting something. The Prez ( or BV software designer/s ) did a very good job on the BV software on the whole but messed up on the description search. I think he should have owned up to the error and explained the 75 character titles was the best that could be done without taking the site down for a day or two ( can you image the squawks that action would have yielded? ). If he had done that he wouldn't be facing this 19 month long period of moaning about the lack of a description. It's okay to make mistakes and we learn more from our mistakes then from our successes.

John, do you have a description search option over there at

If it is the standard search engine then why is BV the only one without a description search ( or so it seems )?

There may be a good chance that

http://www.topnotchauctions.com/

may pick up a lot of the auctions from BV if/when it goes down for good. TNA would be a good choice for any orphaned BV sellers. ( or any sellers wanting to change now for that matter ) JB certainly is trying a heck of a lot harder than the Prez with the short attention span.

For the life of me, I can not understand why the Prez or Bryan would totally refuse to communicate with the mostly loyal and adoring BV sellers/users? Is that anyway to run a company or web site?

I think it has to do with the lack of revenue the site has. They made a huge mistake of not charging a flat FVF from the start, and now they cant fix the site, advertise, or add a description search. The message boards dont work 100% either, but the popups do. Everytime I read the boards there my popup killer beeps like crazy.

The BV Prez has an unimpressive track record in web business and schooling. How many people drop out of the medical profession during residency? The several "sucessful" web sites he has had prior to AuxPal/BV were given up on also.
I think if BV had tried to do a FVF at the onset it would have failed and been about where Carnaby is now ... 3,500 listings, no traffic, and no future. The "mistake" was the bravado used with statements like "No listing fees ever" and "no hidden fees" pledges. If the paid memberships and mandatory annual verification fees aren't a "hidden fee" that what is? Again, if he was honest and came forward with something like "the banner advertising revenue on the net went to hell in a handbasket and we may need to re-think some of our hasty promises and possibly charge a small FVF in the future", most intelligent sellers would have accepted that and appreciated the honesty.

As to Bryan, I can not figure him out at all. He may be shy or he may have strict orders to say as little as possible on the announcement board ( over a month since last post and all previous posts have been deleted ) and in email correspondence..

I thought the BV Pres was a doctor?!! How can he be a doctor if he dropped out of residency??

I would give anything to know what their plans are for the site. Not too long ago I was bored and did a search on Bidville.com and found that the registration is up for renewal in December. anyone want to buy it? see below. I found the info on allwhois.com

Domain Name: BIDVILLE.COM
Created on..............: Thu, Jan 18, 2001
Expires on..............: Sat, Dec 07, 2002
Record last updated on..: Fri, May 10, 2002

To be honest I don't know that much about this kind of thing. Just thought it was an interesting tidbit to share. OK, I was really bored.

palaco has posted an archived AW webpage that allows some search of past AW message center posts.

Try this:

http://web.archive.org/web/19991013082649/http://imagehost.auctionwatch.com/

Scroll down and the Search box is lower left of the screen. Don't forget to check the "also seach msg ctr." box or you won't get any threads!

Works for some but not all - many of the dormant threads (ie inactive for 6+mths) were wiped a couple of years back. Lost way too many gems.
---------------------

I could not find the thread where Orlando and RB argued over wether Orlando was a true doctor. I remember that Orlando seem to win the arugment.
Auxpal was registered in Dec 2000 so every December it has to be re-registered. That will be a good date to watch as BV may not register this year. Maybe that's why the have the "I don't care anymore attitude"?

Here's a thread I found on the "lost" AW search page that has some info in it ....
