Congratulations to Kodi on her new site. The regional sites, especially the far off regional sites, have good prospects just like the niche sites or specialty sites in these postally troubling times.
If you Alaskan or an Alaskan collector or just an online auction buff in general it might pay some nice dividends to visit the site.
Good Luck !

Thanks I'm really enjoying it!
I hope people can make some money there, I'll do everything I can to help them.
People from anywhere can list, but Alaskan Auctions was formed to insure that Alaskans will be treated equally. No "we ship only in the continental u.s." listings allowed!
Anyway, thanks again!
Happy Monday

Wouldn't that be a real corker if someone did place a clause like that in their TOS, no Alaska or Hawaii shipping please.
Good luck and all that new frontier type of stuff.

I am always intetested in seeing new sites and yours is great! AND- I see some bids! Even better all around!
Congratulations on the clean look and quick page loads. Is there a help page?
I went to look in the first place because I was born in Fairbanks. I stayed because I saw some auctions that interested me. I registered because I see potential and now I will list because I think you have a winner! The $50 initial credit didn't hurt either!!LOL! I ship worldwide and have for 6 years!
Lovely site! Thanks!!

Kodiheglin,
I have seen your name as I lurk and learn mostly and have learned alot from seller's and buyers also. So that has helped my 3 yrs on mostly eBay. I was almost positive that you were from Kodiak, as I was born there in the old hospital, kinda tells you about how old I am. Hope we can exchange emails as I don't know if you are there still. I had to move to Anc, for medical reasons. Will head right over to the site and Congratulations, Way To Go Kodiak!!!!!!

Hey Kodi ...
Great, wonderful and all that Can I join?
About the Polar Bear ... I tried to capture one of these for my Aunt who lives in Los Angeles. Seems they are a LOT bigger in person than they are in National Geographic!
The other fact about Polar Bears that many people don't realize is that they can be all cuddly and friendly one minute and turn the next. They are wild and crazy animals.
So, can't get you a PB, but how's about a mosquito? Ours are nearly as big as bears.
Good luck

Hi Kodi,
I recently had an Alaskan buyer for one of my ebay auction items and I just emailed her to tell her her item shipped today. I includded a mention of your new site in my email. Hopefully word-of-mouth adverrtising will help the auction to grow.
Again, good luck with the new endeavour.

Did you know the Torsen family when you lived in Kodiak? That is my mom's family Hubby's family owned the Copper Room restaurant in the Solly's building for years. Feel free to drop me an e-mail at [email protected] , my "real" name is Angie.

Just saw this on a featured ebay auction
S&H within the continental US is only $11.00. Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada are $21.25. Shipping to other destinations will be higher. Insurance, if available, is optional. PayPal is accepted for this auction.
Ouch! Is that a typical s/h hike for the last 2 states to join the Union? I wonder if Guam is worse?

Hi robertsmithson:
At the risk of sticking my foot in my mouth here geographicaly speaking I also word my ads on Romahawk Auctions as shipping anywhere in the continental U.S. for xx amount of dollars and cents.
Since the lower 48 and Alaska are all part of the north american continent and both are served by the U.S. mail wouldn't you think that the term continental U.S. would be understood to be both the lower 48 and also the state of Alaska?
Hmmm, maybe I should change the wording in my ads to priority mail anywhere in the continental U.S. ,Alaska, and the U.S. protectorates and territories. I don't know about first class or media mails but priority mail is the same charge for all.

I don't know about first class or media mails but priority mail is the same charge for all.
You must sell lightweight items. An item going from the East Coast to Alaska that weighs about 3 pounds used to about $6 before 6/30 now it is almost double. Another problem for the far flung states and territories is that competitive package services like UPS & FedEx do not go to most of the cities in these areas. That forces sellers to use the USPS for shipping.
A seller can not easily average the cost of Priority Mail and then hope it balances out. Almost three quarters of the US population lives on the Eastern Seaboard. Therefore for those Americans to charge an 'averaged' Priority Mail cost would cost them some competitiveness in their shipping terms.
Many sellers still continue to use Priority Mail for lightweight items because of a free box or envelope and seem to care little about the buyers having to pay for this extra unnecessary cost because the same item could often travel by First Class Mail for a faction of the cost. Those foolish sellers also lose a competitive edge in their higher shipping terms.

Well this is a suprise, I thought I was going to get a lesson in geography. I wasn't even thinking about the new rate structure for priority mail. Maybe my situation is a bit different as my main items of sale are photo mugs and decoys. They are light weight and a large amount of my sales are repeat customers. It may suprise you but when offered first class mail delivery they opt for priority mail delivery even with the new rates. I suppose maybe quality and price may enter into that decision. I know if I get an item at what I consider a very reasonable price I don't mind paying a little extra for a quicker delivery. Thats just my opinion and observation though and I suppose there are many out there who see things a whole lot differently.

I charted the USPS rates for up to 5 pounds and put it on my husbands user page on my site. It certainly helps to show people ahead of time so they can select the method to use. We have UPS and FedEx in most parts of the state, but the rates are pretty high.

Romahawk, I agree..where's the continental divide?lol There has to be a better way of doing business than excluding people because of where they live within our own country IMO.

Romahawk,
First Class Mail and Priority Mail travel togeether on the same plane. They unload the Priority Mail bags first. That's the difference, other than the hefty price difference on a few ounce items.
I was talking more about light items something like jewelry that only weigh a total of about 5 ounces. That is something like $1.50 plus 20 cents for a bubble mailer. Instead of offering a $2 First Class shipping option you get the old $3.85 for Priority Mail option. On ebay where there are many of the same exact items it is the total price that counts, s/h plus item cost. You offer a photo at $5 + $3.85 Priority Mail when other sellers offer the item at $5 pluss $2 First Class Mail and you're out of the running with most buyers.
To return to the thread theme, Alaska/Hawaii are still totally equal postage-wise within the First Class and Media Mail rates ( we might see Media Mail get geographically indexed next year though ).
Sellers in those regions can adapt to the new postal structure by selling Media Mailable items and First Class Mailable items. No anvils. Sportscards, books, jewelry, videos, lightweight items of all varieties, etc. Make lemonade out of lemons as Ann Landers once wrote.
