Hi,
This topic has probably been discussed sometime before, but I am doing some research on the internet auction industry, and was wondering what sites everyone thinks are the largest (members & items) free (no fees for BASIC listings) internet auciton sites and your opinions on them.
Thank You

The largest is of course ebay. This site ( below ) show the hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, and annual listing numbers of ebay ( note: Yahoo section doesn't work because Yahoo will not post the listing numbers )
http://www.medved.net/cgi-bin/cal.exe?EIND
The second largest site is Yahoo-Japan Auctions with a reported 3 million listings
The third largest may be Bidville Auction with a stated on home page 1.1+ million listings.
Yahoo-USA auctions has an indeterminite number of listings but my guess is about 175,000 auctions ( it's a real bear counting the auctions there and not worth the effort )
ioffer has 150,000+ listings
I wish Dimview was here to give further statisical auction info and a very unbiased opinion of Bidville

AA, I think they want the largest "free" listing auction sites(3rd tier). Bidville is the largest and has free listings, but there is a membership fee. The sell-through rate on bidville is 0.5%. My opinion on all the 3rd tier sites is they are not worth the effort for all the work involved.
AA, I too wish Dimview would return, but I doubt it. Too many inmates running the asylum at the moo.

You may want to consider rating them by sales and not listings.
Using that formula, Ebay is 1st, Yahoo is 2nd then the third tier sites will fill in the other three spots. The final three spots would likely have many sites in a near dead heat, not because they do so well. Because they all do so poorly.
If you do it by listings, then Ebay is still #1, then the third tier sites as they warehouse crap that don't sell. Then I would imagine Amazon would come in some where then followed by Yahoo.
It all depends upon the statistics you want to keep.

Do you know how many members bidville has compared to ebay and epier?

Bidville does not post the number of it's users like some sites do. I don't know nor care about epier's membership numbers. You can gather some info at a site called MooTak that has community forums for third tier auction sites.

Bidville has between 500-750 members. ebay has millions, but not all are active. Yahoo has thousands, but they are not always active. I would say all the other 3rd tier sites have 500-750. Like another member said you cant beat ebay at .30 cents, but we do quite well at yahoo for a nickel.

Stopwine- Even if there was no listing fee at ebay a majority of the items listed at third tier sites would not sell on ebay.
Reason - they are overpriced and non-competitive. There are a few exceptions but most parked items no longer have a need for a competitive price.

Blairwitch said..."Bidville has between 500-750 members."
Blairwitch, please show us where you got these figures for Bidville members. I've not been able to find them anywhere.
Is this a wild guess? Or are you just doing your normal thing when it comes to anything "Bidville"?
I think these folks deserve valid information if you're going to them any at all.

I think BW meant to say "I believe BV has about 500-750 members". Most websites guard the the figure that represents the number of users for several good reasons and Bidville is no exception.
I think there are many more that her guestimation but only Bryan and Ed know for sure.

That's the cadre or core sellers that read the BV boards and will take the time to add the sale code to their auctions. The other sellers are using BV as their web store and could care less about any silly sale.
The BV management rides a fine line with the amount of these sales. Too many sales dilute their effectiveness and pose spam email letter problems with their sale announcement emails. Too few sales cause unrest with the natives.

Good points there AA. I agree with the webstore point of view. As noted before there are many yahoo auction sellers promoting their bidville listings in the item descriptions.
