Let`s also do our part to help spread the word about cancer prevention. For all you women out there, tell your Moms, daughters, sisters, girlfriends how very important it is to schedule yearly pap and pelvic exams, do monthly breast self examinations, and regularly schedule mammograms (yes, they are somewhat uncomfortable but so important for early detection!). For all you men out there, tell your Dads, sons, brothers, other male friends how very important it is to regularly schedule testicular and prostate exams and do monthly breast self examinations (yes, men do get breast cancer - this disease does not discriminate between the sexes!). Also important are colorectal exams, especially for those of us (myself included) who have a family history of colorectal cancer. Spread the word about prevention - you literally could be saving someone`s life!

I received the following email from a friend of mine and it seemed so appropriate to our American Cancer Society fund raising cause that I had to post it. And yes, I cried like a baby when reading it......

Special Delivery!

Sally jumped up as soon as she saw the Surgeon come out of the operating room. She said: How is my little boy? Is he going to be OK, when can I see him? The Surgeon said: I`m sorry, we did all we could.
Sally said, Why do little children get cancer, doesn`t GOD care any more? GOD, where were you when my son needed you? The Surgeon said, One of the nurses
will be out in a few minutes to let you spend time with your son`s remains before it`s transported to the university. Sally asked that the nurse stay
with her while she said Good-bye to her son. Sally ran her fingers through his thick red curly hair. The nurse said: Would you like a lock of his hair.
Sally nodded - yes. The nurse cut a lock of his hair and put it in a plastic bag and handed it to Sally. Sally said: It was Jimmy`s idea to give his body
to the university for study. He said it might help somebody else, and that is what he wanted. I said, No at first, but Jimmy said, Mom I won`t be
using it after I die, maybe it will help some other little boy to be able to spend one more day with his mother. Sally said, My Jimmy had a heart of Gold,
always thinking of someone else and always to help others if he could. Sally walked out of the Children`s Hospital for the last time now after spending most of the last 6 months there. She sat the bag with Jimmy`s things in it on the seat beside of her in the car. The drive home was hard and it was even harder to go into an empty house. She took the bag to Jimmy`s room and
started placing the model cars and things back in his room exactly where he always kept them. She laid down across his bed and cried herself to sleep holding his pillow. Sally woke up about midnight and laying beside of her on the bed, was a letter folded up. She opened the letter, it said:

Dear Mom,

I know your going to miss me, but don`t think that I will ever forget you or stop loving you because I`m not around to say I LOVE YOU. I`ll think of you every day mom and I`ll love you even more each day. Some day we will see each other again. If you want to adopt a little boy so you won`t be so lonely, he can have my room and my old stuff to play with. If
you decide to get a girl instead, she probably wouldn`t like the same things as us boys do, so you will have to buy her dolls and stuff girls like.

Don`t be sad when you think about me, this is really a great place. Grandma and Grandpa met me as soon as I got here and showed me around some, but it will take a long time to see everything here. The angels are so friendly, I love to watch them fly. Jesus doesn`t look like any of the pictures I saw of him, but I knew it was him as soon as I saw him. Jesus
took me to see GOD! And guess what mom? I got to sit on GOD`S knee and talk to him like I was somebody important. I told GOD that I wanted to write you a letter and tell you Good-bye and everything, but I knew that wasn`t allowed. God handed me some paper and his own personal pen to write you this letter with. I think Gabriel is the name of the angel that is going to
drop this letter off to you. God said for me to give you the answer to one of the questions you asked him about-Where was he when I needed him? God said,
"The same place he was when Jesus was on the cross. He was right there, as he always is with all his children.

Oh, by the way mom, nobody else can see what is written on this paper but you. To everyone else, it looks like a blank piece of paper. I have to give God his pen back now, he has some more names to write in
the Book Of Life. Tonight I get to sit at the table with Jesus for Supper. I`m sure the food will be great. I almost forgot to let you know - Now I don`t
hurt anymore, the cancer is all gone. I`m glad because I couldn`t stand that pain anymore and God couldn`t stand to see me suffer the pain either, so he
sent The Angel of Mercy to get me. The Angel said I was Special Delivery!

Signed with love from: God & Jesus

Several sellers have listed American Cancer Society luminaries up for auction on ePier, BidVille, and BidBay to help raise money for ACS. Please do a search for "luminaries" on these auction sites to find these auctions and place a bid in honor of someone you know who has fought the fight against cancer.

And yes, I did put my money where my mouth is - I placed bids on 4 luminaries on the BidBay luminaries auction.

My friend, Connie Starr, is a cancer survivor and is participating in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event in Grand Ledge, Michigan, May 18th and 19th. The Grand Ledge Police Department, where Connie works, is in a friendly competition with the Grand Ledge Fire Department to see which organization can raise more money for the American Cancer Society. The Fire Department is currently ahead by about $200.

To date Connie's team has raised a total of $1711.76 with no less that $776.65 coming from all her generous friends on the Net. That is nothing less that FANDAMTASTIC!!!

At last count, which was Friday, the Fire Dept. had collected $1900 in donations for the American Cancer Society. There are still 11 days before the kick off of the Grand Ledge Relay for Life event - hopefully the police department can pull it off and win their friendly competition with the fire department. Connie has several of her officers still out getting donations and those have yet to be counted. Connie's team goal is $2200 and I am sure they can do it!!

If you would like more information on how you can help the Grand Ledge Police Department win their competition and raise even more money for the American Cancer Society, please email me at [email protected].

Sally:

Can't people that want to, just donate directly to The American Cancer Society?

Is it necessary to go through all the web sites etc. that you mention?

Is this your only venue for posting about this cause?

As I was reading the American Cancer Site today, I can't find any mention of your great work. Why not notify them, so they can post it? Other people might notice that would not be aware of what you are doing. I may not like some of the sites you are doing your gig at, but it is a worthy cause.

This is a great site, and really shows how a non profit, or Not for Profit is run exemplary.

A real 501(c)(3)The financial statement is available as per legal requirements...It is reviewed by Arthur Anderson Co.

It is amazing after you read the entire document how much goes to salary's, rent of buildings, retirement packages, etc. But then all charities do this, just some more than others.

(It states) The financial page at the below link is for the Combined Financial Statements of the American Cancer Society, Inc., National Home Office, Foundation, and Chartered Divisions. These financial statements provide the most meaningful financial information on the entire American Cancer Society organization, since they are presented in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and combine all parts of the organization in one statement. I posted this link and financial statement because you post about it every day, and folks should know if they want to help you out. I know you are aware of it all, but many people may not be....I didn't know how much they made and disbursed each year.......it was an interesting read.

Good Work. Good Luck with your work.

Dadnmom, thanks for the posts! I'll have to check out the websites you mentioned - sounds like some very useful information.

To answer your question, yes folks can make donations online using the www.cancer.org secure website or by contacting their local American Cancer Society chapter (phone numbers should be listed in the phone book). The purpose of my posts have been to raise cancer awareness, promote early detection, and spread the word about the ways folks can get involved in the Relay for Life events happening in their own communities.

The buyers and sellers on ePier, BidVille, and BidBay have really jumped on the band wagon to help Connie's fund raising efforts. A number of sellers have graciously placed items up for auction and donated proceeds from the winning bid to Connie's cause. Others have sent her donations outright, and still others have sent her items requesting that they be part of a silent auction during the Grand Ledge Relay for Life event. It is amazing the support these cyber-friends have shown toward this fund raiser.

I am not directly involved in planning any of the activities in the Grand Ledge Relay for Life event. I met Connie online via one of the chat forums where she posted her involvement with ACS and I took it upon myself to update various chat forums, including this one on Auction Watch, on a daily basis to make sure this topic gets as much exposure as possible. I am a firm believer in the American Cancer Society's research to find cures for cancer - I lost two very close relatives to cancer and my own Dad is a two-time cancer survivor (colon and prostate cancer). I know not all money raised goes directly to research, but the millions of dollars that are spent on research is having an impact. Even 5 or 10 years ago if you were diagnosed with certain types of cancer, it was literally a death sentence. Today medical science has grown by leaps and bounds, in part by research done by the American Cancer Society, to help fight this dreaded disease.

I forgot to mention in my last post that if anyone is interested in learning more about the Grand Ledge Relay for Life Event, they can visit www.geocities.com/glrelay.

Apparently the Grand Ledge ACS Relay for Life event is the talk of the entire ACS organization - this is Grand Ledge's first time holding such an event and has the highest number of participating teams and sponsors for a 1st time event. Is that neat or what?!?

Sally:

Keep up the good work. I know a bit about cancer myself - it so totally sucks!.
Lost my mom to it, and grandma, and others (2 really close friends).

There are a lot of really worthwhile 501(c)(3) Chairites. It's to bad we can't just give to them all.

We do the Surfrider Org. We had to select one, and they do so much to keep the oceans, beaches etc. at a level where we can still go in the water.

There are so many beaches where you cannot even go into the water anymore......carcinogens that cause cancer are found.

The circle if life.

Much good luck to you in your endeavor.

I just thought this good cause needed a little bump back to the top. It was getting buried down at the bottom of the page.

As a 501(c)(3) organization, you know it is
registered is a non profit, and all financial records are available and up to date. Legally, these records must be made available to anyone that asks. Actually they have them available on their web-site (and most non profits have them available online, and/or at their web-sites).

Hey folks! I have a wonderful story to tell you all about Grand Ledge's VERY FIRST Relay for Life held May 18th and 19th. The original goal was to get 15 teams and raise $20,000. Right out of the shoot there were 22 teams and with that many so quickly we thought maybe, just maybe, we could raise $25,000. It was a lofty goal but we went for it.

With help from folks on ePier, BidVille, and BidBay, and a small town committed to eradicating cancer there were 28 teams who raised over $76,000!!!!!!! 846 people joined in walking during the 24 hours of the event. That is unheard of for a first year relay in a town of less than 10,000 people! And, there were 92 cancer survivors who walked the victory lap... all wearing orange Relay for Life survivors t-shirts!! The track was lined with people cheering them on. It was absolutely amazing and so very touching!

The Police and Fire Departments ended in a tie in their little competition to see who could raise the most money. Which is pretty amazing since the police dept. was more than $600 behind the fire dept. less than 48 hours before the start of the event. The VERY GOOD news is, between the two teams they raised..... (drum roll please) $7200. And donations are still trickling in.

I surprised my friend Connie Starr by attending the event to share the experience of the event. She had no idea my family or I would be there - it was so neat to finally be able to meet my cyber-friend in person! We had a great time and are already working on ways to raise even more money for next year's Grand Ledge Relay for Life event!!

Connie took a lot of pictures with her digital camera during the event - there were so many that she put them in an album on a web site - http://www.zing.com/album/?id=4292631301. Feel free to sign the guestbook and leave comments on the site about the pics.

For everyone who participated in this fund raising event, Connie and I cannot tell you how much we appreciate everything you all have done. You have touched our hearts with your kindness and generosity and we are blessed to have been a part of it all.

Thank you and God Bless!!
