I was using paypal in auctions. Was being the operative word.
I haven't stopped using paypal in auctions because of what is happening right now, but because I'm not posting auctions.
I receive money a few times a year from family as gifts or as a reimbursement for something I purchased for them.
My question....If I upgrade to a business or premier account when I start doing auctions again does this mean that money sent to me by family will be charged the fees for either service? If so I won't use Paypal as an option for auction payments.
I'm am/was planning on using Paypal to send rent to my landlord. This would happen 12 times a year. Is their paypal account at risk of being forced to upgrade by doing this? The money comes out of my verified bank account, not off a credit card.

Hi mermaid,
I do apologize for all the confusion that is occurring at the moment surrounding person-to-person payments and business accounts. I am going to take these questions and pose the issues surrounding buying/selling so that they can be addressed. This is a good example of usage.

The landlord question is a good one, too.
Would the landlord need a business account? Would it make a difference if the landlord was simply an individual renting out a basement apartment or room in his/her home -- or was renting all the units in a triplex?

Vargas,
The rent question is a biggie for me.
Hubby & I are using a mother-in-law type apartment that is attached to our friends home. The "rent" that we pay goes directly into the educational account for our God-Daughter.
I won't use Paypal for paying rent if they'll force my friends to upgrade. I'll just write a check.
I also won't use paypal as an auction payment option if they'll end up charging me a fee when family sends money.

Hi Mermaid,
It's too bad PayPal's planners didn't think through a lot of these scenarios in advance.
A good focus group session would have brought alot of these issues forward before they could become a concern for actual users.
You can have two PayPal accounts, one businss and one personal. So you do have a way to separate auction payments from family money transfers -- and keep the family transfers free. Of course, that means you'll have to have two e-mail addresses and two checking accounts. This wasn't very well thought-out on PayPal's part either.
The landlord question is a gray area at this point. I'm really glad you brought it up.
I hope it is clarified in your friend's favor.

you know, if you just want to send a check to the person, you could use Achex... they're pretty quick in sending money that way, and they deposit it directly into your checking account...
