I'm a little upset after putting my credit card information into AuctionWatch to become a member, only to find out that the program doesn't work!

After entering in all of the proper information, the program tries to connect and I get error message:

"Synchronization failed - Unable to resolve server name There is a problem with starting the AuctionSync process. Please check the Announcements page on the AuctionWatch site."

I understand very well that not being connected to the server may very well be on my end. I am a computer tech. and have checked all of the connection settings on my end- no problems. I'm not being a firewall or proxy, I'm using AOL for my ISP connection, but have no problem running standalone browsers (IE and Netscape). I've double-checked the control panel settings which are setup to LAN as usual (so that it doesn't redial a connection each time I access IE or Netscape outside of AOL). I'm using Windows 98 (downgraded from Win Millennium, ME). I use a mail program which connects threw a separate smtp server aside from AOL as a standalone and I'm having no problems with the connection there.

Can someone please assist me further as to what is going on with the program, or if I'm overlooking something here? AuctionSync won't update, and I'm not getting a connection anywhere else! I'm rather frustrated as I don't like adding my CC numbers to many online services as I've had problems in the past.

I've tried numerous programs such as this and I haven't found one quality program yet so I was hoping that AuctionWatch could provide what the others can not - reliability!

Also would like to know how would the rest of you would rate this service? Worth the trouble or not?

Hi there - I'm not with AW, but they are going to ask you to do the following:

"Click on the Details link of the synchronization screen, and copy and paste the text here so that we can see what the problem is."

I figure you might as well give it a shot so that they have the information when they look at this issue.

Hi ChrissysBoutique,

What version of AOL are you running? Thank you for providing the details information. Try quitting everything on your computer and opening only AMPro, and try to synchronize. If you get the same results let me know.

I'm using AOL 5.0...when you say close everything down and try again, do you mean aol included? Because I don't currently have it setup to dial a connection if AOL is not already on. Should I change the settings and have Auction Manager Pro connect on it's own? Is it even possible for the program to dialout itself because I didn't see any properties for that? Please let me know so I can try again. Thanks!

No, you do need to have an internet connection active in order to use AMPro to synchronize.

But, if you have any other programs open and running, the recommendation is to close them.

In the past (if I recall correctly) some folks were asked to do CTRL+ALT+DELETE to see what was running. They were then asked to shut down everything except AOL, Explorer, and AMPro. Of course, some systems don't really run well after that, so if your synch works with just that, you'd need to reboot immediately - and then see if it can synch again after the reboot.

Hi ChrissysBoutique,

The error message indicates either bad proxy settings, or a DNS error on your system.

Please make sure that the AMPro proxy settings are correct (check the menu entry Edit > Preferences > Connection).

Also, please make sure that you can ping client.auctionwatch.com from your system (use a DOS prompt to enter the ping commmand).

Hi Radu,

I agree with you and I'm double checking the settings over and over again with no luck.

I pinged like you said and it comes up as unknown host.

I've always used the auto detect of proxy settings, I don't know the settings offhand for AOL. Do you know where I could find this and should I be putting in the Proxy to use AMPro or should they not be used?

Chrissy

Hi Chrissy,

If you get "unknown host" when pinging client.auctionwatch.com, then this should be the cause of the AMPro synchronization failure.

Could you please check what are the DNS settings for the AOL conection on your computer? And if these look correct (they should show "Obtain DNS server address automatically", probably), you might consider contacting your ISP and asking them about the client.auctionwatch.com domain.

As for proxy, you need not enter any AOL proxy settings inside AMPro.

Thanks,

-Radu

Radu,

I'm not sure what the DNS numbers are as I've never had to use them. I've always used "check automatically" which is how it's setup now. I was thinking today that it could have to do with the Control Panel -> Network setup. I noticed it was set to Microsoft Family Logon so I changed that to Client for Microsoft Networks and I noticed the network components installed are the AOL adapters and TCP/IP adapters. It looks like I have a couple of extra in there that don't belong and doubles as well. I used to work at an ISP doing technical support where we would setup DUN connections for our customers and remove the AOL adapters in there without it causing harm to their AOL connections. I remember that if they had the AOL ones installed they would often have trouble with various software programs. Recently, my mom was messing around with this computer and It has been downgraded from Windows Millennium, ME back to Win98 a couple of months back. This could be the reason I'm experiencing difficulty as I've gone ahead and downloaded various auction management software programs and have not been able to get a single one to connect/work. Clearly the problem is on my end but not sure why as I haven't had any trouble using the standalone browsers, email programs and various other software outside of AOL while connected into the service. Very strange. The whole proxy thing is over my head honestly, and I've never known the DNS server info. for AOL but I'll try to contact them about the numbers. I appreciate your help, I really want this software to work as I'm going crazy trying to get some organization because the amount of time spent on my auctions the old fashion way is killing me! Thanks again if you think of anything else to try let me know...

RADU!

I'M PSYCHED!!!! I went ahead and removed everything in my control panel ->Network (AOL adapters, TCP/IP, Microsoft Client, etc.) and restarted the computer and at first I thought it completely crashed as I ended up with a few error messages and then had to startup in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode I went back into the control panel and tried to reinstall the components in Network and realized I didn't have my backup Windows CD here. Thankfully I was able to local each file needed in the proper directories (took about a 1/2 an hour eeek)...once this was finished I rebooted again and Windows returned to normal. From there, I went straight to removing a lot of the junk software I've been downloading lately. One specific program ZoneAlarm (the firewall) has given me problems before when uninstalling and again threw me into startup errors but I got that straightened out. I removed about 10 programs in all that I've downloaded which I don't use and restarted again. (Note the ZoneAlarm hasn't been running at all -not even the background- when I was trying to use AMPro - so the firewall thing wasn't an issue). Once I rebooted I went ahead and started my AOL connection (scared nothing would work) but all looked good, then I checked OE and everything a-ok! When removing programs I uninstalled AMPro and went ahead and reopened the install file. Once it was installed and opened it immediately started to Sync. It looks as if problems solved now!!! YEY I haven't gone into the program yet to look around but I wanted to post on here first to let you know that I think the issue was the Network settings. AOL's Adapters and such. It could just be my computer but maybe something others can look into if they are dealing with the same issues. I wouldn't go specifically by my troubleshooting but maybe uninstalling them completely might do the trick. Once you open AOL after doing this, AOL automatically updates whatever is missing from the Network Control Panel. Well thanks again for leading me in the right direction, I was pretty frightened after I realized I don't have the Win98 disks incase I made a big booboo! But now I can go ahead and finally get my auctions organized! Another task in itself...

Update- Everything seems to be working well!!I'm curious if you're able to import ended and current auctions running into AMPro? I see you can import an inventory file but I assumed the Sync was going to download the information from EBay. In order to do this is there a specific place on the AuctionWatch website that I should go to or is it just able to keep track of auctions I list from this point on with AMPro? I'm happy to finally get this going...I also went ahead and installed the other auction programs I prev. downloaded and every single one of them now function- go figure!

Hi Chrissy,

I'm glad to learn that you've managed to figure out all the problems

As for your questions about AMPro, you can use this tool only to launch new auctions. If you want to import existing eBay auctions, please use the "Track Auction" link inside the online Auction Manager pages.
