I checked my online bank statement and saw that $109 has been deducted from my Bank Account! Guess what the transaction was called! "PAYPAL ;DES=REVERSAL ;ID=xxxxxxxx." I lost $31 ealier in the week from an item purchased from me with a stolen credit card through paypal, but this is not it. This reversal is for a DVD player that I sold on June 9 and shipped on June 11. ONLY... I HAVE NOT RECEIVED A SINGLE EMAIL FROM PAYPAL ABOUT THIS REVERSAL!

I called PayPal and they said it shows that I received the payment and deposited it into my bank account, but their records do not indicate anything of a reversal. Then I called Bank of America, and they said it CLEARLY shows that they did debit the money directly from my bank account, which they are NOT supposed to do! I called PayPal again, and they suggested that the bank is just wrong or that I should balance my check book, BUT THEY DON"T SEEM TO REALIZE THAT I AM LOOKING AT A STATEMENT AND I SEE "PAYPAL ;DES=REVERSAL ;ID=xxxxxxxx -$109"... None of it shows up on my PayPal account when I log on. I'm so frustrated~ twice in ONE WEEK shouldn't happen! AARRRGHHH!

I'm sorry, you must be mistaken. Per PayPal's Terms of Use:

PayPal will never make electronic transfers from your checking account without your explicit permission. Furthermore, PayPal provides you protection against unauthorized withdrawals from your checking account under the terms of Article III below.

Sorry, no, I am not mistaken. I have called my bank and was told by them that PayPal has indeed reversed. As told by the bank representative "it may not be their policy, but that's what they've done." They then immeadiately took my info to file a claim to be pursued by their investigator. I am not mistaken. This is not the first time i've heard of this happening to people either. Retired2... do you work for PayPal, and if not, how are you sure that something like this couldn't happen?

Sorry, I forgot you could not see me laughing as I made my post. I was being sarcastic. I've read so many posts where PayPal defenders come on the boards and say it didn't happen because "PayPal will never..." I have contended all along that when people give a company electronic access to their bank accounts, virtually anything can, and DOES happen. It may be an accident. It may be a hiccup. It may even be intentional. It really doesn't matter WHAT the reason is. When it happens to you, it doesn't feel good.

The only answer is to keep access to your bank account to yourself.

Yes but that is what everyone is complaining about -- you cant get your money unless you do this! If there are so many angry people out there about this issue, dont you think it would be a good idea for Paypal to prompt the person who is signing up for the service with a big window that pops up and says "Notice" for you to get access to your money, you will be required to give us your bank account information.

That would solve most of this problem.

It is not required to give up your bank account information to get your money. It is only required if you VERIFY your account.

Sorry I snapped, Retired... I thought you were another PayPal cheerleader, and I am just frustrated with the whole situation.

I gave them my bank account info so that I could have funds "zapped" into my bank account.

The only alternatives to getting your money is by having a check mailed, and that takes 2-3 weeks I believe (I'm a po' college student and I need my money as soon as possible), or leaving your money in your account and using that PayPal debit card. The problem with the second option is the possibility (of which I've also read instances of this on the message board) that PayPal will lock your account without reason.

Hi astophel2,

Thank you for your comments.

Can you please forward the information to [email protected]? I need to review your account records to see if you made an instant ach payment (pay with a bank account). If not, I will have financial ops check on the issue.

Thank you for your patience.

Thanks PayPaldamon for resolving the matter. I logged onto paypal and saw that $109.00 has mysteriously been added to my PayPal account under the transaction name "Cancelled Transfer." As soon as I transfered the money back into my bank account (where it will hopefully stay this time), the "cancelled transfer" entry in my user history disappeared. Only I have yet to receive an explanation for what happened and why. I am thrilled that the matter is resolved, but in order to restore my trust in PayPal, I need some answers.

Hi,

Thank you for coming back to the forums to advise that it has been rectified (I don't always handle every case). I don't know what the issue was, but I am going to assume that it was:

a)a clerical issue internally (I didn't see any activity in the account to suggest it was an action on our part, but it could have been an item on the back end that I can't view).

b)a clerical issue externally (the processing agents that clear our ACH transactions or the receiving institution)

Thank you for your patience.

I would be very interested to know how a "clerical issue" can happen, and if they CAN happen, shouldn't the Terms of Use be amended to say "PayPal will never make electronic transfers from your checking account without your explicit permission, except in cases of clerical issues?"

Hi retired2late,

I am sorry, but I don't think you realize how complex the sytstems truly are (you have PayPal, the processing vendor, and the receiving institutions, all with unique systems of their own). The issue may not have been caused by PayPal. I can apologize for the error to the user. All mistakes, regardless of severity, can be rectified.

It's not that I don't recognize how complex the systems are. It's that I don't understand how a company can advertise that they WILL NEVER, and then turn around and say it could have happened due to a clerical issue. THAT'S the part I don't understand.

I also understand that you are not ADMITTING that PayPal was at fault. You are merely saying that if PayPal WAS at fault, it was a clerical issue.

It was probably NetBank.

I agree, retired2late. There's not much money in my checking account (as I said, po' college student), so I know immeadiately when something is amiss. If I continue to use PayPal, I know I'll be checking up on my checking account religiously. I wonder how many "clerical errors" go unnoticed. However, PayPal would have a better rap if there were more customer service representatives like paypaldamon. When I contacted PayPal about the issue, they litterally told me to balance my checkbook, but the issue was resolved the same day I contacted Damon.
