I opened my store when I started listing on Vendio (Auctionwatch then). It has proved a good value, contributing between 35% and 50% of monthly sales.
VD does a good job with the feeds and my specific items show up pretty high in the search engines. I would suggest that if you do list items in your store that you keep the keywords not only in your title, but bolded as the first line of text.
Stores are a great place to hold inventory (holding cost is very low depending on your plan, could be free) prior to an ebay launch.
If you use cross promotions, then every time someone uses your VD checkout they see items (that you can discount) to buy.
You can use your VD storefront as your template and include an EBAY APPROVED link to it which that showcases your items. You can get good sales that way, or at least I have.
While the stores need some tweaking, I believe this is on the back burner and we should see some upgrades soon.
