I am trying to figure out how to code the content/category page to view subcategories vs items contained within the subcategory...and obviously if there are no subcategories (children) then display the items.

I can't seem to figure out how to make it work, I did look at the module/categorytree used for the left-nav, but my skills are lacking.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I'm not sure that I am understanding the question correctly. Do you mean that when your buyer goes to a category there are images of the subcategories that show up, without any items, in the center area of your Store? And then if there are no items in the subcategories the items that are in the main category would show instead? If so, while this is something that you might be able to do using your own HTML code, the specifics are unfortunately beyond the scope of what we would be able to help you with here.

If this is not what you are trying to do, please clarify, as we might be able to help you make the change.

Regards,
Nathan

That is exactly what I am trying to accomplish, is it that rare?

Maybe you can help me think of a better solution...here is the problem:

We have forms of items, lets say crushed and powdered.

Each of those will have a subcategory with types...lets say red, blue yellow.

Each type is available in several weights...lets say there are 4 weight classes.

When the customer clicks "crushed" they would get 12 items, even though there are only really 3 types.

------------------

Originally I was using the item variation functionality, however there is no way to setup separate shipping weights for each.

So how can I organize my page properly? Are there maybe shipping options I have missed?

I do not want the customer to be bombarded with repeated item types.

This is very messy.

Hello,

Unfortunately, it is not possible to set up different shipping weights for variations within the same item.

What might work would be to put one version of the item in the main category and the appropriate subcategory. And then the other versions of that same item in just the subcategory. That way you would have only one of each item show up when the buyers are viewing the main category, but still have all of the variations appear when the buyer picks the appropriate subcategory.

Nathan

That did absolutely nothing, I tried a few combinations of that idea.

The category page still shows everything underneath the level you are on.

I took an item from

"Crushed - Red" and made sure it was ALSO in "Crushed"

It displayed as normal, so then I tried this.

"Crushed - Red - Pound" < It was only in the pound category.

Still displayed when I clicked on "Crushed", so I decided to go back to your idea.

I put the item in "Crushed" and left it also in "Pound", omitting it from the middle "red" subcategory.

Still showed as normal...

I am at a loss.

Hello,

I apologize, you are right that it isn't working as I expected. I am checking with our engineers to see if they have a solution, and we will let you know once we hear back from them.

Nathan

Hello,

I have heard back from the engineers, and unfortunately it is not possible to do what you are trying to do. The only suggestion that I have is to use variations, and add the cost of extra shipping into the price of the variations that have more expensive shipping (as the price of the different variations can be different from each other).

Regards,
Nathan

Now I am curious why subcategories can have images associated with them...
