Hello.
I'm looking for advise on buying a computer. I'm interested in buying a new Imac, but am wondering if for a first-time computer buyer, I'd be able to get away with purchasing a used computer. Any advise? Also, I'm new to using the online auction sites. Could someone tell me how I can post a "want ad" for a new or used computer. Thanks for taking the time to help.

Hello Melissa,
I may be able to help you out. I custom build computers. We can build to suit your needs or your pocketbook. We do not build IMAC's. If you would like you can respond to this posting with your desired specs for a computer and I will do my best to help you, in the meantime, good luck with your search.

When shopping for a new computer, memory is most important. Most of the new ones come with 64 megs of sdram which is not enough !! Processor speed means nothing if you do not have enough ram. With a processor speed over 500 you should have at least 128 megs of ram.

A good place to buy a used computer is a local pawn shop. They are tested before they are taken in to be sure they work. Fatman is right about ram, 64 is definitely not enough, causes me trouble all the time. Good hunting to you though.

Another good place to buy a computer is through a large company such as Best Buy or similiar. Many times they have "Open Box" or display models that are being replaced. They carry the same warranty as new in the box and usually can be returned within a few days for a full refund. Many of the used items on the market place are obsolete government surplus, with older components that are not upgradeble and usually are for a very limited use. The higher memory requirements of the newer software and programs was not even thought of a short time ago, and even 128 meg is some cases falls short. Make sure where you purchase that a full refund can be obtained for a reasonable time, and that the item can be upgraded with the latest hardware and software.
If Fed Ex and UPS were to merge, would they call it FedUP?
