I need help finding a new computer. Mine is a 266 Pen II and has worked fine for years. A few months back I took it in to a local independent and had a new hard drive installed and my old drive transferred to it. Now I have some type of disk and memory problem. It shuts off when I am on the net. The screen and connection both die. I cannot edit all my photos. SO I need something. I do not need the latest and Pen III with a speed around 700 to 900 would be a big step and a 40-gig drive with a nice video and graphics card. I have a good printer, scanner. I would like a Rewrite CD and I do not need a lot of pre-loads. I would like for it to be around $600 dollars. I even have a good monitor. Thank you for your help. Wes

As a computer dealer and consultant for many years, I will give you the same advice I give family members: get it locally from a place that has real tech support. The $50 you might save getting it mail order or from one of those superstores is not worth the aggravation you may run into when you have a problem.
That said, you should be able to find what you want at that price range. You don't need a 1 gigaherz machine. Anything 500 mhz and up will do just fine. Look at the AMD Duron cpu because you can save money without sacrifice. Avoid the Celeron. Get at least 64 mb of RAM, 128 would be best. Considering the 256mb is about $50, this is not much of an expense. 20 gig hard drives are under $100. You probably wont need more but moving up isnt that much. There is a fine line, where cutting to save money isn't worth it and spending more won't get you much more. You have to draw that line. If you want specific info, feel free to email. Don't worry. Unless you live in my local neighborhood, I won't sell you a machine even if you beg. I learned about trying to give long distance hardware support the hard way a long time ago.

Go to Dell or Gateway's web site and look around. You can get a powerhouse system for a great price and support as well.
