I took a break from listing auctions for a while, and came back to the unpleasant surprise of "Checkout." You would think that AW would have learned SOMETHING from the Checkout debacle at eBay.
I do NOT pack prior to auctions closing, and I do NOT quote shipping until an item is packed, so I have no use for a "checkout" that encourages buyers to pay before receiving the shipping cost. How do I make sure my auctions are not subject to this odious attempt to mimic eBay presumptuousness?

I absolutely agree. In an ideal world (I can dream, can't I?), they would allow something basic like maybe integrating a shipping calculator engine so buyers can figure out their own shipping costs like some of the more professional shopping cart engines out there.
I always end up having to include an iShip link in my listing and then end up responding to bidders questions about shipping costs by directing them to this link within the description of the very item they are bidding on!
I used to provide fixed shipping costs for USPS Priority Mail and Parcel Post services but then that would almost always (75% of the time, in my case) end up being either too much or too little. USPS has seven different zones for which shipping charges, especially for Parcel Post, vary significantly. So, invariably, I will come across a bidder who has done his/her own research on shipping costs and will give up giving me a hard time because I was presumably charging too much! Hence my move to iShip, although some of my buyers have complained to me that it does add some inconvenience to the process, and the checkout is not as smooth as it is supposed to be. I hope the AuctionWatch development team is listening .....
