dimview	posted on January 15, 2001 10:48:12 AM new The brokerage firm research reports forecast a decline in listing, but I don't recall Yahoo!Auctions even mentioning it. This is what Yahoo!Auctions said during one of the Yahoo!Chat sessions, though: nutra_2000 asks: How LONG does Yahoo expect it to take to attract Great Sellers and Great Bidders? y_auctions_guest: We already have them and we'll continue to bring in more sellers throughout our network... uctions_guest: and find ways to improve sell through and bring new bidders. uctions_guest: People are becoming more comfortable with the Web everyday and are becoming Yahoo! users using all elements of the network including Yahoo! Auctions. http://auctions.yahoo.com/phtml/auc/us/promo/chat_transcript_1-05.html Yahoo!Auctions does not provide any stats on their auction site, the only thing we can do is estimate their total listings total by watching some selected categories.

musicparadise	posted on January 15, 2001 12:32:19 PM new A report on the Motley Fool quoted one ofthe major stock analysts as saying Yahoo could lose up to 50% of their listings as a result of the new fees. I personally think it will be much greater than that. I cannot IMAGINE that 50% of the people listing will stay and pay the fees. We list very high quality merchandise there (that has a sell-thru rate of about 70% on Ebay) with only a 2-3% success rate. Purely as a business decision I would never dream of paying to list there. The site has a great design and ease of use but NO traffic. It pains me to say it because I like Yahoo services overall and am in fact a stockholder (I think the company will be able to monetize some of their services in the future, just not auctions - other than perhaps an FVF. They would be better off getting something than nothing which is what listings are going to yield them). [ edited by musicparadise on Jan 15, 2001 01:35 PM ]
granee	posted on January 15, 2001 01:11:41 PM new The listings count is dropping MUCH, MUCH FASTER than I expected. Apparently not as many sellers bothered to close, then relist all their auctions (with 2 auto-resubmits) on January 8th and 9th like I did. This is TERRIBLE for Yahoo because, come February 9th, there won't be ANYTHING left. Yahoo and the shareholders are DREAMING if they think the Auction will retain 50% of their listings, and we all know it. Last week someone predicted a loss of 90%, and I said I thought they'd lose 95-98%. I'm revising that now to 97-99%, and I sure hope I'm wrong. The only thing that will save them are the free feedback credits still sitting in accounts, unused by sellers, but there may not be any bidders around by the time everyone starts using them.

forshoppin	posted on January 15, 2001 02:22:48 PM new I really think they forgot that the sellers were also the buyers. When I packed up my auctions and moved I took my loyalty, etc with me. And I have bid on and won 5 auctions on AuXpal. Items I had intended to purchase on Yahoo but...... I also have been surprised at the rapid decrease in the catagories I have been watching. I figured it would be a slow decline and I really hadn't expected to see it so quick in the month.

Auctions are falling off way to fast it hasnt even been 7 days yeat since they started chargeing listings it time to just foucus on a auction site where sales are happening. Guess that will have to show up in stockholder reports sometime or on final sale data when Yahoo goes under. What a shame. They once had a good thing going and we were really energetically doing what we could to get Yahoo growing, then they did this very dumb thing. Keep the information coming. It's impressive.

Clothing & Accessories category alone is down 27% since the 1/9. Lisings didn't increase as much as I expected before the 10th and have been on a steady decline (4%-5%) per day.
