Yahoo!Finance implements "premium" fee-based content.

When Yahoo!Auctions announced the listing fees several months ago, the stock went up in a flurry of excitement before reality set in.

Today, shareholders weren't so thrilled with the news. The stock declined 2-5/8 to 11-3/8, a new 52-week low.

Last I looked the stock was slowly going up, not down. You must be getting old news.

Perhaps the last time you looked was several years ago; here's a link to the current chart:

Your right !! I didn't use your chart but found it went down $4 since the last I checked. I watch "Agri Bio" and "NV Power" more religiously since they are what I HAVE to worry about. =)

Maybe when the sellers that are using free credits run out Yahoo will drop more drastically before we really see anything stablizing there.

Has anyone mentioned that Yahoo is going to start charging fees for their auction in Japan? I'm surprised they're not starting with the listing fee. How totally un-Ebay-like of them to start with a final value fee (Ebay started in Germany and the UK with listing fees).

John

... Yahoo Japan from mid-April will start charging commissions of 3-5 percent, as well as a small monthly listing charge of 50 yen (40 cents) and a yet-to-be-determined base charge to auction participants (probably 100-200 yen).

Thanks for the links I found them both very informative and gut wrenching.

John10101,

Interesting article.

Why do I get the feeling that Yahoo hasn't learned a single thing from the Yahoo!Auctions experience in their decision to impose fees at Yahoo!Japan.

I expect you'll be seeing a comparable decline in the blue line on your chart.

dimview,

Maybe Yawho DID learn something from their experience imposing listing fees here----after all, it doesn't say Yahoo Japan is going to charge LISTING fees....just 3-5% FVFs and a monthly charge of less than $2.00. That's HARDLY the equivalent of the listing fees they imposed on us. AND they're setting up an escrow service at the same time, to get rid of scammers.

Had they done the same thing HERE (charge us $2.00 month plus 3-5% FVFs, and providing an escrow service in return), I believe their auction would be 4 million listings now instead of 200,000 and dropping.

granee,

Not sure what they're planning over there at Yahoo!Japan, but the article mentions three separate charges.

For example, Yahoo Japan from mid-April will start charging commissions of 3-5 percent, as well as a small monthly listing charge of 50 yen (40 cents) and a yet-to-be-determined base charge to auction participants (probably 100-200 yen).

I take that to mean a flat monthly charge, together with both listing and final value fees.

Guess we'll have to wait and see how this latest experiment works out.

Why do I smell a big tax write-off for sale in the near future?

dimview,

The way I read it was that there was only going to be a final value fee imposed on the listings and the listing fee was going to be about $.40 a month as a flat fee (not per listing) and they are going to charge both seller and buyer ("auction participants" approximately $2.00 to use their services. Just my interpretation.

I can't imagine Yahoo charging 40 cents per month per member. That has to be per listing, which is still a steep discount from 25 cents per auction - a minimum of 75 cents per month with 10-day listings.
