FOR THE RECORD, I WAS RAISED TO RESPECT MY FELLOW MAN, AND TO BE THE BEST PERSON I CAN BE. I HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR 30 YEARS, AND ON THE INTERNET FOR THREE YEARS. I HAVE A POSITIVE RATING AT YAHOO OF 302, AND SEVERAL OTHER AUCTION SITES FEEDBACK AS WELL.
I HAVE WATCHED A GOOD AUCTION SITE GO DOWN THE TUBES, AND IT HURTS ME BEYOND WORDS, I USE TEN AUCTION SITES, BUT MY FAVORITE WAS ALWAYS YAHOO, UNTIL THIS PASS YEAR, I HAVE LISTENED TO MANY DIFFERENT LEADERS AT YOUR LOCATION THRU CHAT BOARDS, AND E-MAIL, AND ON YAHOO BOARDS, AND THE NEWS, AND HAVE COME TO ONE FINAL OPINION, WHOEVER IT WAS THAT MADE THE DECESSIONS TO BRING YAHOO FROM A GOOD AUCTION SITE TO WHERE IT IS NOW, IS A SHAME. YAHOO, PEOPLE ARE NOT STUPID, AT LEAST MOST. THEY KNOW WHEN THEY ARE GETTING A SONG AND DANCE. I HAVE LISTED IN THE PASS OVER 100,000 DOLLARS IN AUCTIONS EACH MONTH WITH YOU, AND AFTER THIS MESS, THE NEW AND IMPROVED YAHOO, I PUT UP OVER 5,000 DOLLARS IN AUCTIONS OVER A 3 MONTH PERIOD, I RECIEVED FOR MY EBAY CREDIT, AND I RECIEVED ONLY 10 TO 25 CENTS ON THE DOLLAR FOR EACH ITEM. AND 20 PERCENT WHERE NON PAYERS, AT THIS POINT IN TIME I SEE NO REASON TO CONTINUE WITH A AUCTION SITE THAT REALLY SHOWS BY THEIR ACTIONS, THEY CARE NOTHING ABOUT THE LITTLE GUY, OR EVEN THE BIG SELLERS, THE WAY SOME COMPANIES RUN IT GOES BEYOND COMPLETE LACK OF CARE FOR THE BUSINESS, AND PROPER ETHICS. MY CREDIT POINTS HAVE RAN OUT, AND SO HAVE MY PLAYING GAMES !!!

startrek, check out this thread....
BEEN VICTIMIZED BY YAHOO AUCTIONS?
Then come on over to BidVille.com and we'll make you feel at home. That's where a lot of ex-Yahoo and eBay Sellers are ending up. BidVille is The OTHER Auction Site.
FINALLY... an alternative.

eBay is not a good site for all Sellers. It costs $20 to feature one item, and because eBay IS so popular chances of your item being seen are remote as it sits buried beneath thousands of auctions. You pay to submit... you pay again if you sell. You pay, you pay, and you pay again. No wonder they call it ePay.

eBay is an excellent site for sellers. Their unsurpassed traffic has resulted in a reported 50% sell-through rate and the likelihood of multiple bids.
After listing an "other auction sites" for several months, I decided to begin listing some items at eBay. Last month, I sold ten of 11 items; that trend is continuing this month.
Duplicates of many of the eBay items are listed on BidBay, Bidville, and ePier, and other than a single $1 sale on Bidville, they receive few pageviews and ZERO bids.
In real estate, it's location, location, location; in online auctions, it's traffic, traffic, traffic.

I agree with Cuff...
Dimview, you are wrong. Ebay is not the best choice for all sellers. It hasn't been for me. I have listed about a dozen items in the last several weeks and have only sold about 1/3 of them. Well, then the other sales only had one bid, that is no different than the free sites, except that I had to pay fees on the ones that didn't sell as well. I also started my items off a lot less than I would take elsewhere, hoping for more than one bid (which did not happen). EBAY is not for the small seller and it is not that great for sellers of collectibles because there is just too much competion (spelling).

eBay works great for me, but then again, I am a buyer. The only "real" problem I have with eBay these days is they won't allow me to sell unless I give them my CC number. I still can't figure that one out.
I can, of course list on BidVille for free, but ... there's no buyers there for the stuff I deal in

Ebay is not the best choice for all sellers.
If there were a ranking of ALL auction sites based on sell-through rate, then eBay would be at the top of that list.
But, remember, that's an AVERAGE. Some will do better, others worse.
I am both a buyer and a seller.
As a buyer, I've made some 30 successful bids on Bidville and ePier, along with about ten on eBay. No bids on BidBay.
As a seller, I've sold 10 of 11 items last month, this month continues that trend. I've made a single sale on Bidville, nothing on BidBay and ePier.
So I'm well above the average at eBay (high sell-through rate), and well below the average on BidBay, Bidville and ePier (few pageviews and ZERO bids for a next-to-nothing sell-through rate.)

I have had 3 sales on Bidville this week, and not sport cards. Collectibles. Most of my stuff is under 15.00 and it does not bring enough to pay ebay too! Bidville seems to have picked up at least for me.
edited to add:
Of course, ebay would be ranked # 1. I do not think it would even be fair to compare apples and oranges. Ebay has been online for how long?

Good point. I think the best way to provide a definitive answer is to wait until BidVille et al have been around as long as eBay has up until now - then we'll see who is still standing.

The ONLY reason eBay is #1 is because Yahoo sucks sooooo badly. Yahoo gave them a run for the money before they blew it with their communistic mentality.
Enter BidVille....

eBay will probably always be there. What's wrong with having several good sites? There are plenty of Buyers out there for everyone.

PLEASE READ AND ANSWER HONESTLY BEFORE JUMPING ON MY A-S !!!???
LETS FACE IT, THEIR ARE ALOT OF GOOD AUCTION ISTES OUT THEIR,
But, the bottom line is this, we are living in a new age with computers in every home.
and in most cases, not all, but in most cases, people only know how to turn on a computer, use e-mail, and go to a auction site called e-pay,
with this in mind, i too am on many auction sites, just go their you will find me,
but i live in the real world, not bart simpsons, if i want to pay the electric bill
and put brace's on my kids teeth, then their
is only one auction site that will get me their, e-pay, now i know they are not perfect, and only g_d knows they need to clean house of their rules, and customer service, but the bottom line is i live in the real world, and in most cases, you have to butter some people's bread, and yes even corporations to make a living, i use to sell for 30 years only in my stores, but now have found it harder to do this in a small location area. my best customers are england, hong kong, japan, etc. and i need the connection to these area's and yes thru a sote that grabs me by the b-lls each time i use it. and yes i have thousands of dollars listed on other sites, collecting cob webs, when they grow, yes i will be happy, but who is to say they won't put a cork up my a-s just like yahoo did this year ?! this post is not directed to anyone except greedy auction sites, who take the fun out of people using them !!!
signed;
cork up my a-s
and kid with no brace's.

Do you have a point RB? Of course eBay is number one. We all know that already.
Does that mean it is for everyone? NO.
Does that mean there isn't something BETTER out there? NO, it does not.
Have a great day and visit BidVille when you've had enough of eBay and Yahoo. We're growing and there's not a whole lot that will stop us now... even you RB. *wink*

Yep, ebay has the best sell through? What do people reasonably expect when listing an item for sell-thru? Of course it depends on what your listing, and doing the gut check of would someone really buy this for the price I'm targeting - but what's expected. 50%, 40% 30%? No one gets this kind of rate at a market or a show. eBay has the highest at around 50%, Yahoo is second at 30%..then who? and what %? again, these are averages as dimview points out clearly, but an overall is a good starting point.

Yup.
Look at it this way.
You're on a journey as a seller, and you have three routes you can take.
The first route is an expressway with a 50 mph speed limit and if you average that speed you will reach your objective quite soon.
The second route is quite a bit slower, just a two-lane highway with a 30 mph speed limit. It will take alot longer to reach your objective.
And the third route is an unpaved path. You can only go 2 mph on it. It will take forever and a day to get where you want to go.
So what will it be? The fastest route or the scenic route?

But make sure you carry lots of cash or a credit card, because the TOLLS on the expressway are expensive and every time you turn around they want some more $

My problem with Yahoo is their TOS rules, they canceling of auctions with no explanation, and their major change of attitude in January.
Before January, Yahoo was ideal, and I had left eBay (after 5 years) to sell full time on Yahoo, and I was thrilled - but the thrill didn't last - between Yahoo's no link to web sites, AND mystical TOS rules, and anti-seller attitude, I seldom use Yahoo.
I have found some marvelous niche auctions, and do also use some of the smaller auctions such as: AuctionAddict, ePier, 321Gone, BidBay, Bidville, Excite, niche sites, SYI and TBay (TBay is a small auction out of Tampa Bay).
I also went back to eBay, because our item sell well there, I just up the prices to compensate for the costs. Our sell through rate on eBay is excellent.
As far as smaller auctions go, we have done best on AuctionAddict, one niche auction where we have sold a ton of male oriented items, with some from 321Gone, and Excite & Lycos. I’ve done nothing on Bidville and such. I think perhaps the problem we have encountered at Bidville is that they seem to attract a female audience and the items we usually put on smaller auction sites are more male oriented.
