From TAG:

As of 19 Apr02 Yahoo Auctions had 329,060
As of 07 May02 Yahoo Auctions had 316,720
As of 24 May02 Yahoo Auctions had 314,105
As of 14 Jun02 Yahoo Auctions had 309,097
As of 28 Jun02 Yahoo Auctions had 291,421

I think yahoo is making a mistake by not having a FLD every month. If they dont do something the listings will drop below 200,000. Raise the FVF to 5% and have a FLD.

My regular bidders have apparently left Yahoo and there is little reason to list items more than once there now. The page hits are dwindling on newly listed items that have never been listed before as well.

How can Yahoo just watch it die without a fight? They must want the other components of Yahoo Shopping to benefit from the auction segments death? I can't figure Yahoo out at all but who can.

Bidsbids I have a bad feeling yahoo is about to pull the plug. What really made me believe this was yahoo charging for all fees dating back over a year. I thought the wine auctions would help the site, but yahoo could always make a section for wine and discontinue the auction site. If there isnt a FLD soon they will pull the plug because listings are dropping fast.

After reading Try Wolverton's CNet article ...

http://news.com.com/2100-1017-940172.html?tag=cd_mh

..... I got the same impression. If they were going to pull the plug they'd probably want to gather all of the unpaid balance due to Yahoo Auctions first. It would be more difficult and have less leverage to try to collect the money after the auction was discontinued.

Let's say the listings dwindle down to 150,000 and Yahoo says 'no more' and ends the auction segment. Where will those 150,000 auctions go? Many to eBay and some to the third tier and specialty sites and some may simply quit the auction scene altogether.

The press will make a big deal out of the closing and eBay will gloat.

I stopped listing last week. The last 30 auctions I listed resulted in 2 sales.

What's the point.

Bidsbids If yahoo does pull the plug it will be an eBay sellers nightmare. Without any other venues for sellers eBay can do anything they want anytime they want because sellers will not have a second choice. Then the same sellers who put yahoo down will complain about not having another venue to sell their good. I can see it now.

OMIGOD - so can I!!!

I sure hope we don't have to go back to the pre-online auction days, or, heaven forbid, pre-internet days.

What can we do ... what can we do ...

Don't want to go outside ... can't remember where the door is anyway ...

What's that bright light up there????

Garage sale??? What's that?

Whatta mean make a deal face-to-face with someone else???

This is scary sh1t man.

I thought you were gone RB.

I don't think that Yahoo will pull the plug on their auctions any time soon. I just hope to see more buyers/bids. I don't like waisting my time.

Okay, I modified the ole Johnny Cash tune called "Ring of Fire" a bit to fit Yahoo Auctions current sinking state ...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yahoo Auctions Is A Burning Thing
And It Makes A Fiery Ring
Hounded By Dwindling Listings
Yahoo Fell Into A Ring Of Fire

CHORUS:

Yahoo Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
Yahoo Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

Yahoo Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
Yahoo Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

Even the Yahoo non-auction home page has been slimed up with pop-ups. Used to be I could go there to get a quick sports score or a tip on what's on the tube ... now it's a pain in the a$$ to have to wade through all the pop-ups to get to the meat.

Strike Yahoo from my favs list now ... guess I'll have to try MSN to get my current info.

They almost all have pop ups now or soon will have them. When eBay starts having pop ups soon then the holdouts will all follow suit reasoning that if the only profitable entity on the net ( other than porn sites ) uses pop ups then it is alright to use them for needed cash.

Pop-ups are a pain in the butt but they are easy to get rid of. Go to www.panicware.com and get their free download of Pop-Up Stopper. I put the software on every computer in my house and pop-ups are a thing of the past.

InternetEdge, you're very right! RB loves to complain about the popups, especially the ones he believes are from South Korea, so that would be no fun to him to kill the popups that he loves to hate. Sounds kinda dumb but after you get to know RB you'll understand better.

Thanks InternetEdge ... I'll try that one.

The one I am/was currently using just went past it's trial period so I have to try a new one anyway. One of the problems I had with that one is that, while it killed pop-ups very nicely, many sites (like eBay) use pop-ups for useful purposes (like their Help pages) and it killed those too. It wasn't sophisticated enough to select.

I'll try the one you mentioned when (and if) this strike ever ends and I get some time on my home PC

In the meantime, no pop-ups on my work PC ... what a pleasure I can just imagine what dimview/bidsbids is saying about me lately ( love that "ignore" feature on AW! )

I think all pop-up killers will stop just about all pop-ups. They have no way of knowing which ones you want to see. But what Pop-Up Stopper will do is make a sound when it kills a window (this can be turned off if you prefer), so if you are on a site where you think you want to see a window, you just press the control key then click on the item again and it will allow the pop-up to appear.

This is not a trial version. It is free ware. Worked great for me.

Yahoo Auctions may be dead, but overall Yahoo announced it turned a profit this last quarter and is one of the few "winners" on Wallstreet right now. Wal*Mart did okay too...

Wonder what they are making money on?????

Fees and Listings revenues totaled $74.1 million, a 109% increase compared to the same period last year. This increase was primarily driven by the HotJobs acquisition in the first quarter of 2002, the monetization of Yahoo Personals, as well as an increase in the number of paying customers for Yahoo's other fee- and listings-based services.

Transactions revenues totaled $16.0 million, a 179% increase compared to the same period last year. This increase was driven primarily by increased commerce transactions enabled on the Yahoo network and a shift in some marketing service and fee-based arrangements towards performance-based agreements.

I think this is good news for yahoo and yahoo auctions. Since they are making more money on paid services they may push the auctions in the future. The really need a FLD to bump up the numbers.

I can't complain as I am selling as much at Yahoo right now as I am at Ebay. Neither of which is going to make me quit my day job though.

Would you like to see a FLD at Yahoo again?

I have over 550 items I'd list and that would be a savings of about $30 in listing fees.

Bidsbids I think we will see a FLD in September. Having one in the summer when sales stink is a waste of time because the bidders and sellers are on vacation, etc.

Yahoo's overall listings are dropping but so has ebay's! Average sales price has gone down, and lower sell through forcing many sellers to drop out of selling at auctions. The cost of running an auction site is relatively low so I wouldn't expect Yahoo to give up on it anytime soon.

Good time for a third tier site try to make some strides so when sellers come back they may try something new.

I see any lowering or leveling off of eBay's listing numbers as a very positive thing. There simply is too much merchandise on eBay for the scant number of active bidders and the supply had to decrease. Sellers will always have a myriad of excuses for sales slumps like 'it's summer and everyone is on vacation', etc. but the equation of supply & demand is the real reason. Oversupply means lower prices which means a correction is in order.

Now Yahoo's sinking numbers mean disaster as there is not enough selection to attract bidders. It is not worth the effort and any habit of checking Yahoo Auctions for items needed is now fading away rapidly.

Yahoo could just end all auction units except maybe the Yahoo-Japan unit and know that even eBay is rapidly shifting to fixed priced items. Amazon could say "I told you so" but they better watch it as they are in the crosshairs of Meg's rifle.
