Seller had buy price set at $1,000 only $100 or so under MSRP for a used piece of equipment. There was no reserve, so I bid, and watched, and fought another bidder to the end and "won" the item for $635. I heard nothing from the seller for a day or two so I emailed him. He emailed me back and said my "winning" bid was way under the "Buy Price" he set, so I don't get it. Apparently he got "Buy Price" and "Reserve" mixed up. He said He isn't stupid enough to sell this item for only $635, and won't do anything to fix the problem. Is there anything I can do besides leave negative feedback and risk him countering and leaving me negative feedback in return?

Sounds like this guy just made a stupid mistake. First, email him and let him know he confused buy price with reserve. As far as I see it, you can't force a seller to sell just like sellers cant force a bidder to buy. If he doesnt respond, or responds cordially, let it go. At worst, give him a neutral and explain what happened. I believe negs are for scammers and he didnt cheat you. If he responds nasty, then you can neg because this is someone you want to warn people to avoid.
