I have Outlook Express 5.50. Can someone tell me how to delete email without opening it up. You have to click on it, and when you click on it it gets read. I have already gotten the Kak virus. Thank goodness I had Norton Antivirus 2000. It quarantined it and I deleted that out. I get a lot of spam mail, and such that I don't want to open in fear I might get another virus, but you have to click on it to delete it. Gosh, I hope this makes sense...LOL...

LOL bop...Makes perfect sense to me, too bad I can't help. I don't use Outlook Express because it seems that most of the viruses target Outlook Express. Hopefully someone else will know the answer, just wanted to let you know you did make sense.

On mine, you just click on it to highlight it and at the bottom there is a option to open or delete it. Hope that helps.

auctionee: Wooo, I'm glad you understood me...LOL..!

heygrape: Do you have Outlook Express 5.50? I don't have that option to open or delete it. As soon as I click on it, I'm able to read it. I wish I did have that option..(

Oops no. I have MSIE 5.0.

But still, there should be a "options" spot on there somewhere to set up your preferences. Maybe?

bopkh, are you using the preview pane in Outlook Express? If so, seeing it in the preview pane is not actually 'opening' it, just seeing what the contents are. You cannot get the KAK virus unless you first double click and open the actual message. (speaking from experience)
Microsoft has a patch for it that we downloaded successfully and we have had no problems since. It now just pops up a message in warning so you can alert the person you recieved the email from. (go to www.microsoft.com, go to downloads, and you should be able to find the patch and install it).

You can also set up your options so there is no preview pane and also adjust the time that the message is selected before it is marked as read. (I have mine set to 1 second before it is marked because I read most of mine in the preview pane, then move it. It sounds like you would be happiest settng it so it doesn't get marked as read.)

goingfishing:...I think I must be using the preview pane. Uhhh, how do I know if I am? Here's what happened... I clicked on the mail button in MIE, and then clicked on read mail. As soon as I did that Norton Virus 2000 popped up and told me I had the Kak Virus blah blah blah. It put it in quarantine (thank goodness). I then went into quarantine and deleted them out. A very nice fellow gave me the link to get the patch. I downloaded it. I just looked at my preferences, and it's set at 5 seconds. Are you saying I need to uncheck that, or set it higher or lower, I'm so confused...LOL....

Looking at you email set up in Outlook Express, you will have the list of folders at your left. The right hand side has your list of messages. If you are using your preview pane, you will have another frame on the right bottom that shows the text of the selected message. That is the preview.

Looking at my options(as it's been a while), you can either adjust your time for more than 5 seconds or uncheck the box. If you uncheck the box you would have to open the message for it to be marked as read.

You are lucky that Norton antivirus took care of the virus for you, we weren't so lucky.

goingfishing:...Yes, I've got the preview pane. So, if I go in and uncheck the "mark messages read after displaying" box, does that mean I'll be safe. In other words, will it think I haven't read the message, and I can just delete it? Did you get a virus? Thank you so much for taking the time to explain all of this to me. If you don't mind me asking, how did you put that little smiley face in your message?

bopkh,
Just got back on tonight and saw your reply. Yes, just click that box off. Also I believe I saw one that said to 'download after reading in preview pane' You will want to make sure that one is clicked off too.
Once you do that, you can just delete the message and it will think you haven't read it.
Yes, we did get the virus, however, we got it from a message that we actually clicked open. It was the Kak, we got the patch and now we take precautions. It was easy enough to remove once we knew where to go. It made our autosignature disappear, which was quite annoying.
I make the smiley by putting a colon ( and a parethesis ()) and it translates to the smiley. There is a whole gallery of smiley's that comes to the top of the Ebay forum every so often and that is where the others come from. I don't know how to get to them, but someone here should.
