I recently purchased an item on Yahoo auctions - below is part of the description - edited out - to conform to TOS:
This is a perfect copy of the whole series (all 8 episodes) on VHS as produced by Republic pictures. Starring xxx and many more, these episodes are contained on xxx volumes and total approx. running time is xxx minutes.
Now the picture in the auction was of the cover of the VHS set. However, I received it today and it is homemade copies.
The price I paid was only about $10-$15 below retail, but still I thought I was getting the real thing, not a copy. I thought copies of videos were illegal?
What should I do?
Thanks

I believe its not legal to sell copies of these things BUT if what you pasted here is the description of the auction you won on.
it clearly stated it was a perfect copy.
it apears to all be as described.

spottydoggy - from the description I would have thought I was getting original tapes also, but it does not sound like the seller was deliberately trying to be misleading. I would say something but don't jump down their throat. Hopefully you can negotiate something that works for both sides.

I might write "perfect copy" of a book and this does not mean I copied it and did not leave a page out...
Same with this. I would have thought same as doggie, no doubt about it.
How about inviting the seller?

Thank you all for the replies! I will not make any kind of issue over this with the seller as someone has negged them today over it as it is. I think what throws people off is at the beginning of the description they list a blurb directly from the original video set - then comes the part I pasted here. And the picture is of the originals - not of copies. As I said I won't make an issue, but should I mention to the seller that they should consider making it clearer to buyers that they are not getting originals?

Actually, it's illegal to copy tapes let alone copy them to sell. I think you shouldn't bother the seller at all, but instead go straight to Yahoo regarding this.

But if I would go to Yahoo about it, where would I go? I've never had a problem with an item I received on Yahoo before so I am a bit clueless as to what to do.

It is false advertising, whether the seller meant it to be or not, to post a picture of the actual videos and then to sell copies. And the others are right, it is totally illegal- a copyright violation for sure.
I would ask for a refund, but that's just me.

Duhhhhhh,,, whatever happened to Common Sense
If you are bidding on VHS and the ad says,
a perfect copy.. how can you expect an original??
Now, aside from that, the seller was misleading because he should of stressed that these were copies of the originals.
Deception was used here and buyer should receive a refund. But the postage back and forth and the aggravation make it a real loser for the winner

A good seller should stand behind their product.
If you are disatisfied and nicely explain that you misunderstood the ad and thought you were bidding on an original set and not copies, then I think a good seller will work with you on this.
