Hello,

There are currently several known scenarios that may result in error 240. I have included them for your reference. In this case I noticed that you mention "cash" in your Custom Listing Text. While I do see that you are saying that you do NOT accept cash, eBay's system will still automatically fail listings that contain the word "cash", as it looks to their system like you are offering this as a payment method. Please remove any reference to the eBay banned payment method "cash" from your listings and see if you still have a problem with launching this item. You may locate this reference by going to "My Account" --> "Custom Listing Text" --> "Custom Section 2".

As of November 29, 2006, eBay has placed some restrictions on certain name-brand items.

The first thing you should do is go to Sales Manager, click into the pending errored listing, and click the "eBay Preview" button at the bottom of the screen. If your items are falling into the "restricted" list, this will return a more specific error or warning explaining what you need to do to eliminate the error. Below is listed more detail on the restrictions:

1. If you are listing items that eBay has identified as "particularly susceptible to counterfeiting" (eBay has not published a list of these items at this time) you must be Paypal verified. You do not have to offer Paypal as a payment method, but you are required to go through the verification process.

2. eBay is conducting "seller reviews" of sellers who are listing items on the anti-counterfeiting list. eBay may restrict the sale of certain items by seller. Please contact eBay directly for more information if you suspect that you might have been restricted from selling items.

3. eBay has banned 1 - 3 day auctions of items on the anti-counterfieting list. If you are receiving errors on 1 - 3 day listings, please try extending the duration.

4. eBay is restricting cross-border trade on items on its anti-counterfeiting list. Sellers in the U.S., Germany and UK may ship such items worldwide except to Hong Kong and China. Sellers in English-speaking countries can trade such items freely with each other. But sellers in China and Hong Kong may not list these items on their local sites or on any other eBay site. If you have specified worldwide shipping or shipping to Hong Kong/China, please try revising your shipping to eliminate these locations.

Below is a link to the AuctionBytes article pertaining to this issue:

http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abn/y06/m11/i29/s01

If you are certain that your errored items are not affected by the new restrictions, listed below are several more issues that can result in error 240. Please check the following:

1. The most common cause of this error is that eBay has updated the password you have on file with them or has placed a block on your account. You may not be able to "see" the block when you log into your eBay account, and their CS reps may tell you that the account is fine (however, you will still not be able to list.) The first thing you should do if you are receiving this error is to take the following steps:

- Click on the "site map" link at the top of the eBay page.
- Scroll through the "Services" section (top of middle column.)
- Click on the "I forgot my password" link (located in the middle column.)
- After entering your eBay ID on this page, bypass the "secret question" and click the "send me password instructions" link near the bottom of the page. An email will then be sent to you from eBay with instructions on completing the password change.

Once you have successfully changed your password at eBay, you will need to update the password on our site. To do this, follow these steps:

- Go to My Account -> Auction Site Accounts. Click the "edit" link next to your eBay ID.

- Enter your new password.
- Save the changes.

Note that if you update your eBay token on our website and you still receive error 240, you may need to change the password on eBay, then go through the process of updating the information on our website again.

If you continue to receive error 240 after changing and updating your password, please try launching a test listing on eBay directly. If you are able to do so, there may be another condition resulting in this error.

2. The second most common cause of this error is that you are offering a payment method that is banned (such as Greenzap, e-gold, StormPay, auctionchex, Western Union, cash, etc.) in the eBay marketplace.

In this case you will need to revise your listing by removing the banned payment method. This includes any text reference to the payment method, so please be sure to check your payment options under My Account -> Global Preferences, as well as the Custom Payment Note and/or other custom text fields in your preferences.

For more information on the eBay Accepted Payments policy, please reference the following link:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/accepted-payments-policy.html

3. You are attempting to list an item in a Travel category on eBay before registering for SquareTrade. You must be a SquareTrade member before listing to these categories.

For more information, or to register for SquareTrade, refer to this link:

http://www.squaretrade.com/cnt/jsp/sap/overview_seal.jsp?mp=ebay&campaign=eby_ps_SL4

4. You are attempting to list an item in a Healthcare category that may not meet eBay requirements. For more information on this, please refer to this URL:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/medical-devices.html

You may be able to eliminate the errors by inserting the following text into your listing when listing medical devices:

"The sale of this item may be subject to regulation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and state and local regulatory agencies. If so, do not bid on this item unless you are an authorized purchaser. If the item is subject to FDA regulation, I will verify your status as an authorized purchaser of this item before shipping of the item."

5. You are attempting to list an item in an Wine or Alcohol category. eBay has specific rules and regulations that must be met before listing in these categories. For more information on this, please refer to this URL:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/alcohol.html

If your item is not Wine or Alcohol, please select a different category for it.

6. You are attempting to list an Adult item with Paypal selected as a payment option, which is no longer allowed by eBay. If this is the case, you will need to revise your item and remove Paypal from the list of payment options.

Note also, you must remove any text reference to Paypal from your description and default text. The word "Paypal" in your listing text will cause your listing to fail.

7. You are attempting to list an Adult item and you do not have a credit card on file at eBay. If you do not have a credit card on file, you are required to be ID verified to list Adult items. Please refer to this URL for more information on Adult restrictions:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/mature-audiences.html

8. You are attempting to list another type of item that may have restrictions. For a list of eBay restricted and prohibited items, please reference this URL:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/items-ov.html

9. You are flagging your item as an 'Easy To Buy' item, but you have not specified the listing format to be fixed-price. 'Easy To Buy' items must be fixed-price, and other restrictions may apply. Please change the format of your listings to be fixed-price, or remove the 'Easy To Buy' code/reference from your listing descriptions.

10. The spending limit on your eBay account has been exceeded. To determine if this is the case, please go directly to eBay and launch a new test listing. eBay will notify you when you attempt to submit the listing if the problem is related to this.

11. Your listing may violate eBay's Inappropriate Links policy. Per eBay, sellers may not link to sites that encourage buyers to place their eBay bids through a site other than eBay. For more information on eBay's Links and Credits guidelines, please go to the following URL:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-links.html

Nathan

Not a single one of these has anything to do with our ebay listings...we listed several items before and after this particular listing (one was exactly the same type of auction) and this is the only one that will not list.

Hello Bruce,

The error 240 is a generic error generated by ebay, this is not an error that points to one specific reason. As we have no visibility into your ebay account, we really cannot give you an actual reason as to why this error is showing.

Again: The most common causes of this error is that eBay has updated the password you have on file with them, or has placed a block on your account. You may not be able to "see" the block when you log into your eBay account, and their CS reps may tell you that the account is fine (however, you will still not be able to list.)

You may have to go so far as attempting to launch a test listing through their site for the reason to pop up.

Regards,

Ed

I really don't think that has anything to do with this listing since I have listed over 60 items in two days and about 10 after this particular listing and all the other ones have listed just fine.

Hello,

Where are you listing this item from?

When checking, I didn't see it when searching by SKU or title in your inventory.

Hello,

Please do try removing the word "cash" from your custom listing text, as I suggested yesterday. Let us know if you have trouble locating where this is.

'In this case I noticed that you mention "cash" in your Custom Listing Text. Hello,

Note that there may be a certain word or note in your item description that makes eBay think your item is violating certain rules they have.

Here is the exact error message coming back from eBay when you try to submit this item, which you can see for yourself if you do an eBay item preview:

Hello,

Chances are it isn't the item that really has a problem, rather just a word in the item description that makes eBay think its in violation.

If eBay chat can't help you out, copy the item description and go directly to the eBay website to create the listing from there. Pick the exact same category and try to run through with the defaults till you get to the last page. Either at the last page before you launch, or at the item description field itself, they should give an idea as to which words they are taking issue with.

Christopher
