This blackware pottery piece was purchased by my mother on a trip to New Mexico at San Ildefonso pueblo in the mid-1960s. This piece is 7 1/2" wide, 4" tall and the opening of the pot is 3 1/4" across. It is solid black and quite heavy. It
is unrestored and exhibits the dulling of the blackware finish that
occurs over time. It has two signatures on the bottom "Minnie" in what appears to be pen and in pencil, "Popovi Da." As my mother has dementia, I have not been able to find out more details as to why and I was a young child when the piece was purchased. I do know with certainty that it was purchased at San Ildefonso Pueblo in the mid-1960s.
Based on what I've researched, Minnie Vigil was born in 1931, so she would have been in her 30s when this pot was created. More recent examples of her work show her working in the polychrome style. There are examples of Minnie's work using several different pottery styles, showing her to be a versatile artist. She is a Santa Clara potter, so it is a puzzlement as to how or why her piece may have been at San Ildefonso, unless purchased by the shop to sell. I have provided as clear a description of the signatures as possible.
I "rescued" it from the first sale of my parent's things when they moved
out of their home to a retirement community. My father held no
sentimental value to anything and growing up, I had looked forward to
having this and a number of other Native American artworks to add to my collection. Instead, we bargained and I kept this piece, letting a Santa Clara wedding vase go on the sale. Buyer pays shipping on this piece which will be double-boxed to better ensure safe arrival and will be professionally packed, so shipping is higher than you may normally see because I would not want to skimp on packing and have this vintage piece damaged in shipping. Shipping includes insurance for the full price of the piece.
The Signatures: My mom's dementia prevents me from getting more of the story on this particular piece, so I can tell you how it is signed and what I've researched on the internet. I've done my best to capture the signatures on the bottom of this pot in photo 4. "Minnie" and "Santa Clara", which I thought were etched, are actually written in pen. However, written over the Santa Clara is "San Ildefonso" and below that "Popovi Da," in what appears to be pencil. I have compared the Popovi Da signature to examples on Popovi Da Pottery 1922-1971 (http://popovipottery.com/) and the "Popovi" appears to be commensurate with examples on the site, and while someone pointed out the "P", what I notice that is not quite in sync is the spacing of the letters. I do know that the writing is not that of either of my parents; what I don't know is if an enterprising shop merchant chose to write the more famous name on the pot, especially since Popovi worked with his mother Maria Martinez at San Ildefonso. I do remember growing up that my mother referred to this as a Popovi Da piece (and she always said "Da" instead of "Day" so my aunt, whose father had assisted in Maria's "discovery," was always correcting my mom). I had never looked closely at the signature until we brought it home from my parent's house before the sale and that's when I noticed there were two signatures.
It is priced less than a range for a San Ildefonso blackware piece of this size is selling for without taking into the account that this piece is nearly 50 years old from a time when Native American arts and crafts were beginning to get the recognition they deserve. Shipping includes extensive packing to be sure the pot will arrive intact.
