Trail of Painted Ponies Runs the Bitterroot by Kevin Kilhoffer memorializes the importance of the horse in Native American culture and particularly, in the valiant fight of the Nez Perce lead by Chief Joseph to get to Canada and away from the U.S. Army. This Pony is signed x2 by Kevin Kilhoffer, both the base of the Pony and
the box. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity that this was 148
of only 150 of these first edition Runs the Bitterroot ponies signed that come with a certificate of authenticity. Runs the Bitterroot was issued with the Summer 2008 herd and retired December 2009 in the middle of the second edition, so just under 16,000 of this Pony was produced when this model was retired. Pony number is 1E/9274. It has been opened for the autograph and for pictures.
Chief Joseph's famous surrender statement, "From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever" is in relief on the base. This is one of the epic stories of the American West and it was the Appaloosa horses they rode that helped the Nez Perce evade the Cavalry on this long and arduous trek. Horses that, in frustration, were destroyed by the U.S. Cavalry. Chief Joseph is remembered as a wise and extremely strategic tactical warrior who tried to lead his people to a better, more peaceful life north of the border. In Runs the Bitterroot, Kilhoffer captures the majesty of the Nez Perce war horse. For the admirer of Native American culture, horse collector, and Painted Ponies collector, this would be a centerpiece to have in a collection.
