You are looking at the Trail of Painted Ponies Spirit War Pony, issued in Winter 2003 and retired February 2005, in the 3rd edition (3E/). This Spirit War Pony is a relatively low number in the issue carrying the number of 1E/2760. Spirit War Pony is in excellent condition and comes in its original box with hang tag. Artist is Tavlos. IF you can find this Pony on the Internet, a 1E is running $265 with 3Es at $100. The 1E complete is becoming harder and harder to find. Trail of Painted Ponies are now the #1 animal collectible and values on coveted early first editions, special editions and highly limited editions are expected to rise as the secondary market becomes the only way to acquire the Westland Ponies.
Spirit War Pony's story: The Santa Fe artist Tavlos is credited with originating the famous
howling coyote imagery that became a trademark of Southwest art in the
'80s. Known for his bold colors and vivid designs, he took a pop art
approach to the Native American tradition of painting their war horses,
giving his Pony a turquoise coat and decorating it with dazzling
accents. This is one of the most colorful of the Ponies and it is a personal favorite. I decided my collection is just fine with a lower edition so this one is offered for sale.
Spirit War Pony does have a slight rub on the right ear from shipping. I have corrected this for any future shipments by removing the styrofoam where the ears rub. This is not uncommon with the older Ponies--I had a Rosie arrive where the tight styrofoam caused a small chip to her ear. The rub is about the size of the head of a pin (about 1/16") and is visible in the head shot, the full shot shows that this does not detract from the overall appearance of this Pony. I had not noticed it when the Pony arrived, only when I was looking for any factory flaws to describe. Buy It Now reflects this small factory flaw. Box shows typical shelf wear for an early Pony.
Your purchase will also go to help children on the reservations get an education, in the spirit of the
original sales of the Trail of Painted Ponies, contributing to animal,
wildlife and environmental organizations. A portion of the sale of this pony will benefit St. Joseph's Indian School which helps provide warm meals, clothing and a good education for reservation children.
