One of my favorite Ponies, Runs the Bitterroot was issued in the summer of 2008 and retired in December of 2009 in the middle of the second edition. This is 1E/0992, a nice low number which have been relatively scarce in this particular Pony. This Pony is in excellent condition and is listed as "used" because it has been displayed. The artist for this pony is Kevin Kilhoffer who has designed several of the Painted Ponies. This one commemorates the famous trek of the Nez Perce lead by Chief Joseph as they evaded the U.S. Cavalry, trying to reach Canada where they could live in peace and freedom. Their sturdy Appaloosas took them hundreds of miles. What is not often reported in the history books is that the Cavalry was so frustrated with their near defeat, that the horses were run into a ravine and shot, killing nearly 400 of the herd that the Nez Perce had carefully bred for their color and stamina.
Runs the Bitterroot's story:
"The Native Americans' admiration for the horse took many forms. A
favored horse dressed for ceremony or war would often be adorned with
striking regalia, as well as painted. The beauty and mystery of the
Indian horse mask as the emblem of a warrior Pony is captured with great
power by an Oklahoma historian/artist in this masterful tribute to
Chief Joseph. The legendary leader of the Nez Perce, who is credited
with the successful breeding of the Appaloosa, is remembered for his
principled resistance to the forced removal of the Nez Perce from their
Idaho homelands. Chief Joseph's surrender speech, in which he said "From
where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever," immortalized
him in American history and popular culture."
