The design of the reverse is changed now to the Native American and will be featured annually with a new design that memorializes Native Americans who has made important contributions by the Indian tribes and the individaul Native Americans to the development [and history] of the United States.

The Native American $1 Coin Act also calls for edge marking on the coins. The year of minting and mintmark are incused on the edge, as is the inscription E PLURIBUS UNAM.

The coins' design was chosen by the secretary of the Treasury after consultation with the committee on Indian Affairs of the Senate, the Congressional Native American Caucus of the HOuse of Representatives, the COmmission of Fine Arts, adn the National Congress of American of American Indians. They are also reviewed by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.

The act allows for the minting of Uncirculated and Proof coins in each design. It also specifies that at least 20% of the total mintage of dollar coins in any given year (including Presidential dollars) will be Native American dollars.

Coins have a distinctive golden color and a plain edge to distinguish them from other denominations as the Susan B. Anthony had a very short run of only 3 years for circulating coinage and then the last year which was a collector's conly coin sold to whoever paid the mint direct for them. because they were mistook for a quarter.

The coin is made from a composition of a pure copper core with outer layers of manganese brass and nickel.
