RED NAILS SKETCH

  This original art is a preliminary sketch for Robert E. Howard's RED NAILS Part 3 SPLASH page drawn by BARRY WINDSOR-SMITH in probably the fall of 1973. First printed in Marvel Comics Savage Tales #3 1974. The final was changed as you can see by the attached image. On the reverse side is a note written to Linda Lessmann saying, "Please be nice to me, I'm very tired."   
At the top of the page BARRY WINDSOR-SMITH has written on the left-"SPLASH #2" and on the right-"Red Nails".

Here is a detailed description by my wife and owner of the art Linda Lessmann Reinhold-
"This drawing is from my personal collection.   I met Barry Windsor-Smith (then Barry Smith) in November of 1972.  Our personal and professional relationship spanned more than eleven years, from early June, 1973, to late August, 1984.  Sometime early on in the relationship, Barry was working frantically to finish Marvel Comics adaptation of "Red Nails" by Robert E. Howard, featuring Conan the Barbarian.  He was working virtually around the clock, hardly sleeping at all.  One night I fell asleep on the couch and awoke to find his message written on the back of a blue pencil drawing of Conan.  Barry always sketched his layouts first in blue pencil, adding more finish with black pencil and finishing with ink.  The drawing is similar to the one that appears on the splash page of the third installment of the "Red Nails series.  Although the drawing is not signed, I personally guarantee that it is his work.  Circumstances are such that I must sell it."

The sketch was done in blue pencil and the note on the reverse side done with brush and India ink on 2 ply bristol board Marvel paper 11 1/2" X 16".
