He learned photography as an apprentice in a New York photo studio & then worked for the Associated Press & Town & Country magazine. After coming to California in 1935, Kelley established a photography studio in Hollywood & produced promotional photographs of motion picture stars. Tom photographed the Hollywood celebrities throughout the 1940s & 1950s in Hollywood. David O. Selznick & Samuel Goldwyn retained Tom to take promotional photos of their stars & starlets for magazine covers & advertising. A few of his most famous celebrities have been Gary Cooper, Greta Garbo, James Cagney, Clark Gable, Winston Churchill, Bob Hope, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Jack Benny, John F. Kennedy, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt AND of course, Marilyn Monroe, with & without clothes. Mr. Kelly is best known for his iconic 1949 nude photographs of Marilyn Monroe, one of which was distributed widely as calendar art & was featured in the inaugural issue of Playboy magazine in 1953. MARILYN MONROE CALENDAR HISTORY In 1946 Norma Jean began using the stage name Marilyn Monroe, but did not legally change her name until February 23, 1956. During the 1940s MM was modeling & posing for pinup calendars as well as magazine covers. The 1947 calendar entitled The Right Number is one of her first pinup calendar appearances. This calendar pre-dates the famous Tom Kelly session. On May 27, 1949 MM posed for the calendar photograph that would one day make her a household name. Kelley produced 24 transparencies of two basic poses of MM lying nude on red velvet titled 'A New Wrinkle' & MM seated nude on red velvet titled 'Golden Dreams'. Golden Dreams became the most popular of the two appearing on calendars, decks of cards, key chains, coasters, glasses & a host of other pinup collectibles.
