Cousin Maude or The Milkman's Heiress is a work that revolves around family values, love, passions and emotions. Set in the Northern hills, there is a beautiful depiction of the landscape and the journeys that are undertaken in the course of the story. A captivating tale brimming with emotions!

Author Mary Jane Holmes was born in Brookfield, Massachusetts. Her father was a brother of the Reverend Joel Hawes. She taught in a district school at the age of thirteen. She married Daniel Holmes, a lawyer, and, after their marriage, they settled in Versailles, Kentucky. Her first novel, Tempest and Sunshine depicted southern society. She published over twenty-eight novels and collections of stories.  Some of her books attained a sale of 50,000 copies, astounding for a woman of her era. Mrs. Holmes ultimately made Brockport, New York, her residence.

Cousin Maude was written in 1860 and is likely to have appeared as a serial in the New York Weekly.

This edition was published by the Homewood Publishing Company (Chicago), between 1893 and 1914 (when that company was active). Blue cloth binding with red and black decorations and black lettering. 12mo size (not quite 7 3/4" high). 217 pages. Printed on heavy paper.

Good condition. Paper age-tanned. A couple of small dings to the cover and the cloth is torn near the edge of the spine. Clean, tight, and unmarked.
