Lives of the Great Composers Harold Schonberg
Price: $4.98

From J.S. Bach (1685-1750) to Anton Webern (1883-1945) , acquaint yourself or your students with the full sweep of Western music. Biographies of 58 great composers and their times so arranged as to allow you to follow the movement of music from one school to the next and understand the influence of the musicians on those who followed them. These are written in layman's language and full of interesting stories that will hold your students' interest. Accompanied by some CDs of each composer's music, this would make a great music history course.
Near fine condition hardback without dust jacket. spine slightly cocked. Light edge wear. Bottom corners bumped. Foxing to page edges. Otherwise clean, tight, and unmarked. There is one defect to this volume. Pages 377-392 have been bound into the book upside down and backwards. It's a little disconcerting when you're reading through the book, but the pages are all there, you just have to turn the book over for a while. Illustrated in black and white, mainly, but not entirely with portraits of the composers.
