Summary:
Print shows John Paul Jones, quarter-length portrait, facing slightly right,
wearing uniform (anchor buttons, stars on epaulettes, cocked hat) with two line
inscription.

important addition in the catalogue raisonné of the images of John Paul Jones.
No
reference was found to this plate and no printings have been located. After
searching the National Portrait Gallery, the Library of Congress Online, the
New York Public Library, the American Antiquarian Society, and other major
institutional collections via Worldcat.
This
engraved plate is possibly a late 19th century (or early 20th century) variation copy or
restoration of an earlier piece by Petit-Servant Planeur from the larger 1779 print
of John Paul Jones in the National Portrait Gallery [ref. NPG.67.54] attributed
to Johann Elias Haid. There are examples of the larger print of Jones.
