George Fuisdale Jowett stood 5' 6" with 8 1/4" wrists, 15 1/4" muscular forearms and 17 3/4" upper arms, and was legendary for his feats of grip strength.
Inspired by Sandow as a boy, Jowett built a multi-million dollar industry with his courses and counted Tom Mix, the Weider Brothers and Johnny Weismuller as his clients. His programs are fully illustrated and explained without hype. He did it all and he did it amazingly well! His accomplishments read like a "who's who" in the history books of the world of physical culture!
George Fuisdale Jowett initially working as a blacksmith and chainmaker, to support his exercise career. By the late 30's, Jowett controlled five corporations, and had offices in Australia, New Zealand, parts of Europe, Britain, and the Far East. His story is far more miraculous than the Charles Atlas story, crippled from a fall and told he would not live past the age of 15, he achieved unimaginable success. While working as editor for Strength magazine back in 1926, Jowett decided to write a book on all he learned from the oldtimers and put into practice himself. He set out to put down on paper stories and methods that would help anyone build tremendous strength through weightlifting. At the time, he didn't realize how much he knew. Crudely typed on a manual typewriter, the lessons and photographs look archaic today but Jowett wrote books and pamphlets that establish him as one of the major pioneers of bodybuilding and strength training in this century. In addition to many pamphlets and books he began manufacturing sports equipment of his own invention and design: the revolving, plate-loading barbell, the coil-spring chest expander, and the Seat of Health, a cast-iron rowing machine that could be folded into a suitcase. His writings, however, became the source of his empire and his techniques became highly respected. In 1968, the year before his death at age 77, George Jowett was presented with the Molson Trophy in Montreal, honoring him as the man who had contributed more than anyone in the history of bodybuilding.
In early days he loved to entertain at the local fairs - straightening out horse shoes, snapping chains around his body, lifting 550 lb barbells off the ground with one finger. Aside from breaking horseshoes with his powerful hands, his most famous feat of strength was that of lifting a 168lb. anvil by the horn to shoulder height and pressing it with one hand in street clothes! The famous Alan Calvert, founder of Milo Barbell Co., referred to Jowett as, The Most Scientific Weightlifter in America.
In the early 1920's Jowett at 154 lbs, lifting 310 lbs, became the first man in America to lift double his body weight. At 176 lbs, he lifted 340 lbs. in a clean and jerk. At 192 lbs, he became the first North American to one-arm swing more than his own weight, pulling up 210 lbs. In Chicago, he won the title "World's Best Developed Body".
