DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH 'KOLA KOLA'
The seeds for Defenders of the Faith were sown over a decade ago in the pre-dawn haze of UK acid house. Markie Mark moved on to become a founder member and DJ with the Wicked Sound System in San Francisco, a role for which he is probably best known.. When musician and lighting technician Neil Harris upped and joined Markie and the rest of the Wicked crew, Defenders of the Faith was born. This release marks a radical left turn for Grayhound, when all around seem content to rock the house formula 'til death them do part.
Reflecting a rich musical heritage dripping in dub reggae and experimental jazz, coupled with Markie's reputation for long house sets of the twisted variety, Defenders of the Faith have already made a mark with their remix of DJ Garth & ETI's classic 'Twenty Minutes of Disco Glory' on Grayhound and on the Black Diamond compilation album on Three Sixty Records.
On to the music... Side A's 'Kola Kola' is a drum dub that lets timbales and a free form bass line do all the talking. 'Space Baby!' lets rip with very workable drums and off the wall jazz fusion stylings while the inside cut 'Captain's Revenge' features the experimental rap of Shagee Manatee slung low over a dirty down tempo groove, with Neil on guitar.
