Bushi no kakeibo - Based on actual
journals and accounting records, Abacus and Sword chronicles the decline of the
Samurai age in 19th-century Japan.
They say the pen is mightier – what about the abacus? An
accounting geek with zero sword fighting talent, Naoyuki is hardly your
run-of-the-mill Samurai. Nonetheless, he defends his Lord and family faithfully,
using an unlikely weapon: the abacus.
With a sense of honor as exacting as any warrior’s and a
rigorous ethic of honesty even in the midst of dire poverty, Naoyuki (nicknamed
“the Mad Abacus” by his rivals) distinguishes himself as a hero for the
approaching modern age.
With a nudge to Japan’s romantic view of the office worker as
modern-day Samurai, ‘Abacus and Sword’ reimagines the Classic Samurai drama as
it follows Naoyuki and his family as they serve their Lord not with the sword
but with the abacus.
