BLOODY SPEAR ON MOUNT FUJI - REMASTERED
Chiyari Fuji - Classical Japanese period piece about a dim-witted Samurai and his servants as they traverse the Tokaido highway.
With a focus on unglamorous characters, much of the film is played as comedy, making the brilliantly staged violent climax all the more shocking. An impressive Samurai film, full of marvellous moments and unexpected twists.
Kojuro is a good-hearted, but undisciplined young Samurai on a mission to deliver a tea bowl to Edo for his clan Lord. He is traveling there, along the Tokaido Road, with his two retainers -- his lance bearer, the middle-aged Gonpachi, and his aide Genta.
Along the way, they encounter people of every rank -- and even pick up some traveling companions. They have various adventures, ranging from comic (a group of nobles blocks traffic as they hold a Fuji viewing tea party in the middle of the road) to suspenseful (apprehension of a wily master thief, disguised as a monk on a pilgrimage) to heroic (the rescue of a young woman being sold into slavery by her impoverished father). Kojuru's experiences have given him greater sympathy for commoners, but tragically do not increase his wisdom. A well-intention, but rash gesture then leads to tragedy.
As decisively as Kurosawa before him, Tomu Uchida broke the conventions of the chambara or swordfight film with his witty, loose-limbed "A Bloody Spear on Mount Fuji".
Director: TOMU UCHIDA
Stars: KATAOKA CHIEZO, TSUKIGATA RYUNOSUKE
1955 - JAPANESE with ENGLISH SUBTITLES - B&W - 94 MINUTES - ORIGINAL FULL SCREEN VERSION
