RICKSHAW MAN (1958) - REMASTERED

Muhomatsu no issho - Set in Japan at the turn of the 20th century, it shows how a simple rickshaw man has to adjust to the modernization of his country.

Matsu-goro is a poor rickshaw driver whose animated spirit and optimistic demeanor make him a favorite of the town.
When Matsu helps an injured boy, Toshio, he's hired by the boy's parents, to transport the boy to and from the doctor appointments. Matsu soon comes to love the boy and his parents.

When Toshio's father dies, Matsu becomes a surrogate father, helping to raise the boy and secretly falling in love with Toshio's mother Yoshioko....... but he is constrained by social boundries from ever expressing it to them and can never be more than the rickshaw man to the mother and son he loves so much.

Mifune's portrayal of a common man who does not apologize for his lot in life but instead lives it to it's fullest extent is both amusing and inspirational.
