KING OF JAIL BREAKERS (2009)
Itao Itsuji no datsugoku-ô – (aka: King of Escape) Japan, late 1920’s. Masayuki Suzuki is a prisoner in constant flight, every time he's put in prison, he manages to escape.
No matter how many chains or locks deprived him of freedom, he always ended up escaping from his cell. No cuffs or prison bars could hold him because he utilized his unique intellect and physical abilities to escape at will. He subsequently becomes a national icon because there wasn't a prison that could hold him.
But every time Suzuki broke out, he’d allow himself to be caught after a few hours, so what exactly was the purpose of his escapes? His cycle of escape and recapture baffles one of his jailers, who starts to unravel the mystery. Why does he keep escaping? And what exactly is he “escaping” from? He is eventually sent to the Confined Prison Island. Can he escape this time, or is he trapped forever?
This movie depicts a grim picture of life in prison, with cruel guards beating inmates over everything. You'll feel sympathy for Suzuki because of it, even when his behavior seems stupid. However when his real goal is revealed, you really want him to succeed - and will pity him when it fails. A film that is able of doing this deserves praise, but don't expect to go away feeling happy.
Director: Itsuji Itao
Stars: Kôji Ishizaka, Itsuji Itao and Jun Kunimura
