WOLVES (1971) - REMASTERED

Shussho Iwai - Hideo Gosha has made an undisputable master-piece about rivalry, betrayal and the feud over a train-line.

Wolves is set in Japan in the 1920s as the disintegration of the ancient samurai traditions is paralleled with the rise of the Yakuza. It's 1929 and to celebrate the Showa Emperor Hirohito's ascension to the throne, hundreds of yakuza are pardoned and released from jail--men who, perhaps, would have been better off behind bars.

Three gangsters try to keep themselves from getting killed, not only by their higher-ups but by those who perceive them as a threat against the old ways, and these 1920's gangsters are vicious, killing with knives, often holding their opponents tightly while slashing and gutting them.
