Akitsu Onsen - A haunting tale of unrequited love, and one of the most beloved Japanese melodramas of the postwar studio era. Based on a novel by Fujiwara Shinji, Director Yoshida completely changed the story, discarding the original happy ending in favour of a haunting tale of unrequited love and post-war disillusion.
The story begins in literally the last 24 hours of World War II, and although the fatal attraction between a spineless intellectual and a strong woman is conventional, its enactment is radically new. Joining post-war background, devotion, loneliness and passion, Yoshishige Yoshida creates a remarkably beautiful and lyric film. Relying only on the two main characters relations, Yoshida focuses on the few days that the two protagonists meet each other at the hot springs resort of Akitsu during a period of seventeen years.
