Sony's MDS-JE330 MiniDisc Recorder records up to 74 minutes of stereo and features wide bit stream technology for clear reproduction of sensitive low-level music. The 20-Bit analog-to-digital converter delivers a wider dynamic range than 16-bit circuitry. And with the handy text entry feature, you store disk names, track names, artist's names, even lyrics for easy readout - so you'll never have to remember what's on your MiniDisc.Wide Bit Stream Technology maintains 20-bit precision through the recording process, for clearer reproduction of delicate, low-level music. Hybrid Pulse D/A Converter is an advanced Compact Disc design that places the Digital-to-Analog Converter and digital filter on single integrated circuit. CD Synchro Recording simplifies making cassettes or MDs from Compact Disc. It releases from Record/Pause mode automatically when the CD Player goes into Play. Un-Do Last Edit is the convenience that lets you reverse your last Move, Erase or Combine edit. Un-do remains available until you eject the disc or record over your work. MiniDisc enables you to continue shaping your music, even after it's recorded. The deck can record from various sources ie cassette, cd, radio, vinyl etc via either the phono, coaxial or digital optical connections to rear. It has a head phone socket to front with volume control. You can also save track name and number to the disk via the edit function so when disk is playing you see on minidisc display album and track name.
Review
Sony uses a new version of the ATRAC system, and also comes with an electrical input. This matches the digital output on most high-quality CD players and sounds much better than the optical feed. Facilities and features include the Sony's jog/shuttle dial which is slick in operation thanks to a 'push to enter' facility, which makes editing functions a doddle. Other goodies here include a 'music synch' system allowing the recorder to start as soon as an input is detected, and 'time machine recording'. This enables you to start up to six seconds after the start of something you want to copy without missing the start: if you record off of the radio a lot, you'll wonder how you managed without it! Add in a remote handset with keys to speed up entry of titles and control track up/down and pause on a Sony CD player, and you've a well-thought-through machine. The latest version of ATRAC is extremely good, as is the single-bit DAC used here, and when you record form an analogue source the analogue-to-digital conversion isn't too shabby, either. Digital copies from high quality CD players are all but indistinguishable from the original. The bass here is powerful and well defined, giving music a firm foundation. Music as diverse as the Michael Jackson dance disc and the Haydn ortortio failed to catch the Sony out, while even close-up jazz with subterranean bass lost little of its impact. Midband and treble projection is similarly impressive. Rock and pop is handled with suitable swagger by this machine, the perky pop of Supergrass still zapping from the speakers and all the raw energy of the remastered Hendrix albums captured to thrilling effect. Even copies of vibrant radio broadcasts sound fresh and involving. Just keep an eye on the levels when recording from analogue sources, and the Sony's a breeze to use. Home recording value for money doesn't get any better than this.
Jog dial: The player has a jog dial which, besides being used to access tracks and titling is also used for accessing a set up and edit menu to select many of the recording/playback options.
Hybrid pulse D/A converter: This places the converter and digital filter on the same IC to reduce signal leads and minimize interference.
Converter: The A/D converter is 20 bits.
Shock protection: A shock resistant buffer holds up to six seconds of music for shock protection and time shift.
Recording level: In addition to the standard analog level, this unit also allows you to set digital recording levels for better control over your digital recordings.
Peak hold: This function freezes the level meter display at the highest level reached by the input signal.
Track numbers: The track numbers may be set manually or automatically. When recording from an analog source auto track marking is based on the signal dropping to a specified level for 1.5 seconds or longer. The level can be set from -72 to 0 dB in 2dB steps.
Smart Space: Long silent spaces will be replaced with a 3 second blank. This feature may be turned on/off and you must be using the digital input.
Auto Cut: When the source is connected through the digital input, if no sound is input for 30 seconds it will replace the silence with 3 seconds of silence and place the unit into record pause.
Time machine recording: The last 6 seconds of data is stored in buffer so you can start recording 6 seconds before you actually engage the record function.
Updating: After recording, editing, or changing the table of contents the MD is only updated when power is turned off on the front panel or the disc is ejected. An interruption of power through the AC cord will cause everything that was changed since the last updating occurred to be lost.
Name erase: This function allows you to erase all titles on a disc simultaneously or you can erase them one by one.
Undo: This function cancels the last edit and restores the MD to the way it was prior to edit.
Automatic conversion of digital sampling rates: This allows you to convert 32 and 48kHz to the 44.1 kHz sampling rate of MD, so you can record from DSS with digital out or DAT/DCC.
Sleep function: You can select on (60 minutes) or off.
Music synch: This allows you to synchro-record with any audio equipment.
Synchro buttons and CD buttons on remote:These buttons allow you to synchro-record with a Sony CD player.

For starters, when you are buying Sony, you can be pretty certain you are buying quality equipment.
Having owned and run my own successful recording studio for a few years now, I feel I am in a pretty reasonable position to comment on sound quality. The sound quality on this particular unit is particularly good. As with all other Sony equipment I have ever owned, it has functioned reliably and as expected in day-to-day use.
The MDS-JE330 even has some excellent little features which made it ideal for my live use when going solo. The Auto Pause function means that I don't have to run back to the unit after the end of a song, to make sure it doesn't leap into the next unexpectedly.
With a particularly comprehensive remote control, MOST features are readily accesible with the push of a button. There are however a few options which are quite useful, but you have to first enter the menu on the unit itself. At first look, this is a daunting adventure, but it is straight forward once you work out the means for using the menu system itself.
The instruction manual could possibly have been a little more informative, but I don't think I've ever found a perfect instruction manual, so as they go, this wasn't bad.
I have been using the Sony MDS-JE330 now for almost a month. This is a very well constructed unit. No cheap quality or short cuts here. The unit is black and would be welcome in any livingroom. The record/playback from this unit is unbelievable. I use the optical input on the back to connect to my Sony CDP-CD335 CD player. When recording optical/digital the record volume is autoset. The resulting recording is a 100% duplicate. The analog is also as far as I can hear the same. I use the optical input so I do not have to mess with the record input level. On major drawback is when recording digital the copy protection scheme is active and will not premit you to recopy the copy. I have never tried to recopy a copy but the copy protection scheme is talked about all over the internet. The Sony MDS- JE330 is has all the editing features of the more expensive decks and sound just as good. You do not get a time stamp, pitch control and the other bells and whistles of the MDS-JE520 and up but you also are no paying hundreds of dollars either. I purchased the Sony MDS-JE330 as all I wanted was good recordings and basic editing. I highly recommend this deck. You will not be disappointed.
