More about horizontal wood:
It was discovered in 1827 by Henry Hellyer, a surveyor with the Van Dieman’s Land Company, who couldn’t squeeze through the impenetrable thicket.
It grows vertically as a tree, seldom thicker than a broom handle, then it falls over and sprouts more vertical growth, which in turn falls over to form higgledy piggeldy horizontal layers, which have been annoying bush walkers ever since.
Horizontal has been used for axe and broom handles for a long time, but more recently, its attractive, fine grain [which needs to be seen up close to be appreciated] and excellent working properties have been recognised by wood craftsmen.
