Vintage Large Hand Carved African Drum
This is truly a vintage and unique decorative collectible item as well as a functional drum with a deep bass sound!!
Would look amazing in a music room or with any African decor!
Hand carved large wood bowl with a drum head that we were told is from antelope or cow hide. The animal hide is also wrapped around the sides of the drum (please note: there are a couple of areas on the side where the hide is a little loose and rippled. It is decorated all around on the side with a hand made braided roping with animal hair braided in. The bottom of the drum also is wrapped in animal hide.
Stands 22" high x 20" diameter drum head with a 10" diameter base
Weighs 12 pounds 10.6 ounces
This was purchased in Zaire, Africa approximately 40 years ago from the local artisians and handcarved from the native African hard wood.
Drums are among the most important art forms in Africa, used both as a musical instrument and as a work of sculpture significant in many ceremonial functions, including dance, rituals, story-telling and communication of messages.
This is in good, well taken care of vintage condition although the rim around the drum head has some areas where the hair has worn off and some areas of the roping is missing and are are loose. The hide on the side also is loose and rippling in a couple of areas (see last picture above)
