Watters (1893-1987), better known as Hyla Doc, led a remarkable life,
inlcuding nearly a quarter-century in China, mostly at the Methodist
hospital in Wuhu. Her memoir, superbly edited from her letters home,
tells tales of Chinese culture (especially medical folklore) and
contemporary events. There are good doses of adventure, such as the
difficult journey back to Free China during World War II, and some
brief and interesting conversations with Chinese comparing their
religions with Christianity. Recommended for public libraries where
