Description

Phoenix is a bundle of plug-ins optimized for Pro Tools TDM systems that emulate the many desirous and dynamic sonic characters of analog tape recording and applies them to any track within PT. The sonic signatures of both the tape recorder's electronics and the magnetic tape itself are incorporated into the emulation. Phoenix is a 'from the ground up' software version of Cranesong's hardware HEDD processor so popular amongst digital audiophiles.

To emulate all the different great but sometimes-subtle colorations analog recording imparts to sound, Phoenix comes bundled in five different variations. All five have an input level control analogous to adjusting "how hard you hit the tape"; a Process control for dialing in the amount of the Phoenix process; and three overall color choices: Gold for flat frequency response, Sapphire for a brighter overall sound and Opal for a warmer tonality.

The five plug-ins are: Luminescent--the most neutral and subtle effect; Iridescent is similar but with more midrange and bottom; Radiant has an aggressive compression sound; Dark Essence is more aggressive yet with a wider frequency range that affectively tones down sibilant vocals; and Luster starts subtle and goes into the Dark Essence area when cranked.

In the studio I found uses for all five. Luminescent works great on the whole mix for just a touch of air and openness not usually found on a lot of digital recordings. I like both Iridescent and Dark Essence on vocal tracks depending what I wanted to do. DE and Luster can be magical on the right vocal track! Radiant is good for guitars and other individual tracks.

I'm still investigating all the uses for this marvelous plug-in but I love the subtle, instant 'healing' quality they add to the sound. It is one of very few plug-ins that always sounds better inserted than not.

PHOENIX is Crane Song's new suite of TDM plug-ins designed to emulate the unique properties of a magnetic tape machine. Designer Dave Hill has crafted this software with the same attention to detail he used to create the electronics for ATR Service's much heralded “Aria” discrete tape recorders. His intimate knowledge of analog electronics, as well as decades of experience as a recording engineer has spawned a very useful, musical suite of plug-ins. The PHOENIXprocess not only incorporates the nonlinear saturation characteristics created by magnetic the tape itself, but also includes the interrelation of an analog tape recorder's record/reproduce electronics and equalization curves. The PHOENIX suite is not merely a downscaled version of the Crane Song HEDD processor, but a ground-up application derived from HEDD technology, and specifically engineered and optimized for Digidesign's TDM architecture.

Five different TDM plug-ins emulate different tape characteristics, each one incorporating a color change button allowing three choices to modify the process. The Gold button is the position where the color is approximately flat in frequency response, with Sapphire being a brighter, and Opal being a warmer tonality. A level control determines the amount of the PHOENIX process integrated into the audio signal, and an input trim determines “how hard you hit the tape.” Because the DSP process is level dependent, reducing the input level will also cause a change in sound.

The input trim can also be used to prevent clipping in the rare cases where clipping may be a problem. This can be useful on material that is hitting close to or at digital zero. When the input trim is at 0dB, (no change in gain) and no tape process is being added to the sound, the plug-in is bit accurate, meaning the output exactly matches the input.

The PHOENIX plug-in suite provides a wide range of choices to make your digital world sound warmer, fatter, and more analog. The plug-ins can be somewhat subtle, but the cumulative affect when used on a number of tracks can bring back the warmth and richness which only analog recording has been able to provide.

SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE $450.00 USD

Features

The PHOENIX suite contains five separate plug-ins:

Luminescent is the most neutral sounding process of the five.
Iridescent has a similar magnetic character, but with a fatter bottom and midrange. This plug-in is the most similar to the tape knob on HEDD-192.
Radiant is characterized by a more aggressive compression curve
Dark Essence is even more aggressive. (The effect is a color with a wider frequency range--when used on a vocal Dark Essence can reduce sibilance problems by increasing the apparent loudness of the rest of the signal.)
Luster starts more gently than the other four processes, but becomes as aggressive as Dark Essence when the process is at full scale.

Running within Digidesign's multi-shell architecture, PHOENIX is very DSP efficient. It will run approximately twenty instances of a plug-in on a single DSP chip (HD system at 44.1 kHz sample rate).

PHOENIX's color is dependent on signal level, program material and sample rate. A higher sample rate results in smother sounds.

Review from TapeOp magazine:

Phoenix is actually a set of five different plug-ins: Luminescent, Iridescent, Radiant, Dark Essence, and Luster. All share the same simple interface design. There's an input trim, a big knob that controls the effect amount, and three buttons affecting the color of the effect named Gold, Sapphire, and Opal.

Phoenix is very DSP efficient, which is good since I fell into the habit of putting it on everything in a mix. On individual tracks like electric guitar, I noticed it made the track sound more full, punchy, and louder, even though the tracks were already well recorded and sounded good. When placed on tracks that were not well recorded, I wasn't feeling the need to EQ and compress as much because I was hearing a sonic quality that was pleasing to my ear. When you put the plug-in on every track, the build up of its sonic character starts to become familiar. You could say it sounds like tape.

As I was mixing away with Phoenix on almost every track, I thought things were sounding pretty good. I decided to turn all of the instances of the plug-in off and listen to the before and after. I played the mix, listened for a bit longer with it on, then hit the key combination that made all of the instances of the plug-in inactive. When playback resumed, my jaw hit the floor in complete disbelief. The tracks simply sounded empty or rather naked without Phoenix. I was officially hooked.

As far as tape emulation goes, the only thing that's missing is the tape hiss!
