This is a beautiful new writing instrument from Bill's Talented Turnings.  The pen pictured is the pen you get in this auction.  This is a high end very prestigious looking pen.  This Cambridge Hybrid Deluxe Fountain pen has been made from a beautiful Damascus Steel M3 Pen Blank.  M3 is an exciting new space age material that is just now being recognized for its remarkable beauty, strength and futuristic properties.  Millions of dollars have been spent perfecting this material for the aerospace, medical, marine, architectural and other industries.

The skin of the Space Shuttle, the Stealth Bomber and the International Space Station all contain examples of this remarkable new material. It is electronically depleted so that it will not conduct electricity or promote electrolysis allowing for new metal alloys that are just not possible in nature.

These pen blanks are made with up to 95% of the real metal that has been atomized down to the molecular level and combined with special chemical binders to form a new composite material called M3 (short for "MacroMolecular Metal"). The new metal has the same visual characteristics of the source metal with a surface hardness that will allow an unbelievable gem quality finish. The finished piece is almost indistinguishable from the "real" metal because it is real metal.  M3 makes the finest and most exquisite custom writing instruments.

Damascus steel is a hot-forged steel used in Middle Eastern sword making from about 1100 to 1700AD. Damascus swords were of legendary sharpness and strength, and were apocryphally claimed to be able to cut through lesser quality European swords and even rock.  Damascus swords often had an obvious patterned texture on their surface due to the high carbon content and the folding and hammering of the blade.  True Damascus is very expensive costing thousands of dollars for a very small amount.  M3 Damascus shares the same visual characteristics as the original for a fraction of the price. The manufacture of this pen blank used High Carbon Steel layered with bright Stainless Steel to create their version of this ancient art.

I turned this pen on my wood lathe in my studio workshop.  The Damascus blank was sanded and polished to a high gloss. I then wax sealed it for protection.  This is a great conversation piece and truly a piece of art.  The pen pictured is a rollerball pen.  I comes supplied with a disposable ink cartridge and a refillable ink resevor.  Disposable ink cartridges and liquid ink can be found at most office supply stores.
