How to Combine DV Camcorder Bags to Make Life Easier

  • If you own a digital video camcorder you need a protective storage bag to keep the camera and your gear safe while on the road to your destination. Video enthusiasts who've been shooting digital video for awhile may have accumulated enough equipment and accessories to fill two or more DV camcorder bags. Although all their gear might be safe from the elements, it's not practical to haul around so much gear, especially when traveling or sightseeing.

  • Empty all of your camcorder bags of equipment and accessories onto a flat surface where you can take inventory of everything you've got.
  • Organize your gear into groups, including frequently used items and types of equipment, such as lenses, extra battery packs and videotapes with protective cases. Place cleaning and maintenance items such as lens tissues and a can of compressed air in a separate pile.
  • Designate one camcorder bag as your primary gear bag. This bag will hold only essential items needed on assignment or during the day while sightseeing on vacation for example. Think critically about what you actually need during a day of shooting, versus only what you might want. For example, if you plan to shoot for six hours and each battery pack provides a two-hour charge, then you only need three battery packs.
  • Pack the camcorder in the padded main compartment with extra battery packs in outside pockets for quick access. Pack only the extra lenses you actually plan to use during the day. For example, if you are visiting museums, chances are you won't need that heavy telephoto lens in your primary bag. Remember to pack enough video cassettes, if you use digital tape, to last you through the day's shooting. Generally, carry no more tape than you have battery-charge time. If you have six hours worth of battery power in your bag, there's no reason to carry more than six hours of digital video cassettes.
  • Store only basic maintenance items in an outer pocket, such as a small can of compressed air and a packet of lens tissues. Leave the oil, screwdrivers and other tools back at your office, home or hotel room in a separate camcorder maintenance bag. You also can leave behind all data cables, such as the cords used to hook up the DV camcorder to a computer for downloading your footage. Every little item contributes to the weight load, so if you won't be transferring videos during the shoot, you don't need to carry the video cables.
  • Place other nonessentials, such as voltage transformers for international travel, in your maintenance bag. You've already included enough battery packs in the main bag, so you don't need to carry the battery charger or a set of voltage transformers.

How to Travel Safely with a Camcorder:

  • Carry your camcorder in a padded case. They may cost a little extra, but replacing a cracked lens will cost much more
  • Always bring your camcorder as a piece of carry-on luggage when traveling by plane. Never check your camera at the baggage counter and never stick it in the trunk. Your camcorder will be safer from the elements on the seat next to you
  • Have the camera ready at customs and security gates. The security checker will likely want to inspect the camera to be sure it is not a weapon
  • Buy adapters for international power outlets. Make sure you get a quality adapter for your charger when you are traveling abroad. Don't buy one that is going to short out and ruin your battery
  • Get a room with a safe. Check ahead of time with your hotel to see if there will be safes in the rooms. Most cleaning staffs are very professional and ethical, but lock it up for extra security
  • Let your camera warm up or cool down before using. If you'll be traveling to vastly different climates, you'll want your camera to adjust to the new temperature naturally
  • Insure your camera. Many home and contents insurance policies cover accidental damage

NOTE:

  • When the bag gets wet, you can wipe it with a dry cloth to fully dry before using, otherwise it will cause fabrics to fade
  • Please keep it from sunlight and high humidity environment
  • Protect your digital camera from accidental damage and scratches
  • Do not use chemical lotion (alcohol, alkali, etc.) to wash it, otherwise it will cause deform of the product
  • If you don't use your camera for a long time, you can take it out from your bag. Reserve it at the other place
