How to Use a Slave Flash Unit With Your Digital Camera:
- A slave unit is a photography device used to activate external flash units that are not connected to the camera. Most external units use a cable or wireless transmitter to fire, which works in most situations. A slave unit is a light sensor that activates the external flash when a burst of light hits it. This can be useful for tricky lighting situations or to fire multiple flashes with one mechanism. To use a slave flash unit, you need to initially fire a flash from your camera
- Place the camera and your subject in your desired locations
- Place the flash unit in an area that satisfies your lighting requirements and is within your camera's flash radius
- Orient the flash unit so the slave receptor is facing your camera. It must be able to be stimulated by your camera's flash to fire. This may require a few test shots.
- Tape a small white piece of paper to your flash if the slave unit is unable to directly face the flash. Orient the paper so that it catches the initial flash and then bounces it toward the slave unit
- Recompose the subject and camera in its place and take the photo. The flash from your camera should activate the slave unit
