How Do Car Oxygen Sensors Work? - What Does the O2 Sensor Do? Oxygen sensors sense the amount of unburned oxygen in the exhaust. They send this information to the computer, which then adjusts the mixture of air and fuel going into the engine. The ideal mixture on all cars is 14.5 parts air and one part fuel. If there is more than 14 parts air to one part fuel, the mixture is "lean." This can cause detonation. The computer will try to compensate for the extra air by allowing the fuel injector on time to be lengthened, thereby allowing more fuel into the engine.
- If the oxygen sensor senses more than one part fuel to 14.5 parts of air, the mixture is "rich." The computer compensates by shortening the on time of the injectors, thereby decreasing the amount of fuel into the engine
- Codes and Diagnosis: When an oxygen sensor senses an incorrect amount of fuel and air, the computer also turns the check engine light on (on the dash). This light tells the driver that something is not correct and to check the system. The oxygen sensor is one of the only sensors that causes a "soft code." A soft code is when the light comes on but may go off by itself. All of the other sensors send "hard codes." Once the light comes on because of a hard code, it will not go off until the problem is repaired and the codes are reset.
- The Meaning of Codes: The oxygen sensor sends a soft code to the computer because there are other things that can make the air-fuel ratio be off. The oxygen sensor will only send a code while the air-fuel ratio is not correct. If it corrects itself, the light will go off
- There are many things that can cause the oxygen sensor to turn the code light on. Most times, the oxygen sensor itself is not bad. Rather, a poor air-fuel ratio can be caused by a bad plug wire, bad plugs, a bad coil or other sensors not doing their job. If the oxygen sensor code includes a heater element code, then the actual sensor is bad
- To see which oxygen sensor is turning the light on, you will need a code scanner. A code scanner can be purchased at any big box auto parts store. The scanner comes with a code sheet. Plug the scanner into the port under the driver's side dash. Follow the prompts on the sensor. When the code come up, match the codes to the scanner's code sheet (which comes with the scanner). Repair as directed
Car Air Purifier Oxygen Bar Uses:
How to Check and Change a Car's Air Filter? - Before you can change your air filter, you need to check to see if you even need to replace the one you have. Open the hood of your car
- Flip back or release the spring clips on the side of the housing for the air filter. This is a black box located on the driver's side of the engine under the battery
- Pull out the air filter. Look it over. Is it very dusty? Does it look white or is it grey or a creamy color with parts of leaves in it? If the filter is discolored or has bits of dirt in it then you should replace it
- Place the filter back in the chamber you pulled it from. You cannot drive to the store to get another air filter without already having one in your car
- Close lid and snap back in the clips
- If your air filter is clean, you are done. If you need to replace your filter, read on
- Go to your local auto parts store and to the air filter section
- Look through the book, or ask personnel for information on which filter to buy
- Purchase the new air filter
- Open the hood of your car and the lid to the air filter housing again
- Take out the old filter and throw it away
- Place new filter in chamber.Close lid and secure the chamber by snapping in the clips on the side of the air filter housing (black box)
- Close car hood
Tips & Warnings: - This process may be similar for most cars. The air filter housing is easy to spot, but the type of filter varies
- Be sure to wait until your engine has cooled, about 15-20 minutes after using your vehicle, before opening the hood of your car to check the air filter
- Do not attempt to clean and re-use your air filter. The filter used for Saturn SL1 models is a pleated paper type of filter and can't be washed
- Do not drive without an air filter in the housing unit. This may result in wearing on your engine and causing a fire.Replace old filter with a new one before it throwing away
Car Air Purifier Tips: - A typical car air freshener works by releasing fresh pleasant scents, such as from lemon oil or pine oil, into your car interior. Such a car air freshener does not really freshens or purifies the air in your car, unless it is actually a car air purifier with an freshener add-on in it. An ordinary auto air freshener does not make the air healthier for you to breath. Yet, it can still be useful in certain ways
- One example is when you don't really have any noticeable air quality problems in your car, but simply want to "spice up" your car environment with a slight touch of your favorite fragrance. An air freshner could be one option to try
- Some people also use car air fresheners as quick fix cover-ups for real odor or air quality problems when trying to sell the car to somebody else
- When you have a car air freshener, pay attention to how you feel while driving (any headaches or discomfort?), to make sure you are not too sensitive to the chemicals your freshener is made of. The chemicals in some automotive air fresheners may also leave a trace on (eat into) the plastic of the dashboard. Check that this does not start to happen for the air freshner in your car
- If you have a problem with the air in your car, a car air freshener is most likely not the right start in finding the solution. If possible, it is much better to solve the problem at its source. Do you have any exhaust leaks? Oil or other leaks near the air intake? Or maybe you have a cabin air filter and you didn't replace the filter for too long? (Or you are even unaware that you have a cabin air filter and that it needs maintenance?) The upholstery needs cleaning
- Finally, if you drive in smoky or dusty environment, it is better to use a car air purifier to capture the smoke or dust particles rather than to just distract yourself with pleasant fragrances from an air freshener
