How an Inverter Adapter Works: - The Purpose of an Inverter Adapter - There are two basic kinds of electric current. The electricity that flows out of your wall at home is called alternating current, or AC. It switches directions about 60 times a second. The current stored in your car's batteries, however, is direct current or DC. It always fllows in the same direction. Laptops, cell-phone chargers and most other electronic devices are designed to operate on the AC current at home. To run off the power provided by a car battery or other DC source, they require an inverter adapter to change the DC into AC
- Making AC - An inverter adapter is powered by electronic switches called transistors. An inverter will have at least two transistors, although some designs have more. One switch sends a negative pulse of current and the other sends a positive one. A controller turns the switches on and off in turn, creating a wave of electricity that changes continuously from negative to positive, much like the AC that comes out of the wall at home
- Setting the Voltage - The AC in the United States is usually in the range of 110-120 volts, and the AC in other countries is up to 240 volts. The electricity in a car battery, however, is at about 12 volts. The inverter adapter uses a device called a step-up transformer to make up the difference. A transformer is a device with two coils of wire right next to each other. When electricity runs through the primary coil, it creates a magnetic field that surrounds both coils. This creates an electric current in the secondary coil. If both coils have the same number of turns, both will have the same voltage electricity. In a step-up transformer, however, the secondary coil has more turns then the primary. This "steps up" or increases the voltage. In an inverter adapter, the voltage is increased to 120, 240 or whatever voltage the country it was built for uses
