How to Download Using a USB Data Cable: - Several ways exist to download files and transfer them to a device, such as a cell phone or media player. The same is true when you want photos or other files downloaded to your computer from a portable device, such as a camera or phone. While options include Bluetooth transfer and transfer via an external memory card, downloading and transferring files via a USB data cable remains an effective method, because it's relatively fast and simple.
- Download Files to a Device
- Connect your cell phone or other portable device to your computer via a USB data cable. Once connected with a USB cable, your computer should install the USB drivers and recognize the device. If not, disconnect and go to the device manufacturer's website to look for driver downloads.
- Open the window where the downloaded files are saved on your computer. Size the window so it only takes up half your screen.
- Open the window that displays your connected device's files. Size it to fill half the screen, so the windows are side by side.
- Drag and drop the downloaded files into the appropriate device folders. For example, ringtones may have their own folder, and songs may go into a folder called "My Music." If you're moving songs you've downloaded to a program such as Windows Media Player, drag to the far-right window and "Sync" with your device. You may have to click "Refresh Devices" if yours is not recognized.
- Disconnect your device from your computer. In the lower right taskbar, click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon. Once you select "Remove device," your computer will tell you when it's safe to disconnect.
- Download Files to a Computer
- Connect your device to your computer via the USB data cable. If a window pops up, click on "Open Folder to View Files." Alternately, go to "My Computer" and click on the drive where the device is connected; it may be recognized as a removable disk. Size the window so it only takes up half your screen.
- Open the folder where you want to save the files on your computer. Size it to fill half the screen so the windows are side by side.
- Drag and drop the files you want to save to your computer.
